Authorize.net → The Trade Desk · Conversion tracking

Connecting Authorize.net to The Trade Desk

Authorize.net is one of the oldest payment gateways still in wide use, which means it sits underneath a great many legacy carts that were built before anyone thought about attribution. The Trade Desk buys across the open internet rather than inside a walled garden, which means it cannot rely on a logged-in graph and has to work with identity you help it construct. The join between them succeeds or fails on one thing: whether Unified ID 2.0, derived from a hashed email reaches the Authorize.net transaction before the conversion happens, because The Trade Desk can only match a conversion it can tie back to a click it recognizes.

Founders, marketers, and agency owners describing the before-and-after of their Authorize.net → The Trade Desk tracking rebuild — in their own words, on camera.

The problem

Why this join usually fails

Authorize.net → The Trade Desk-specific issues
Leak #01

Unified ID 2.0, derived from a hashed email never reaches Authorize.net

The single most common cause. The gateway sees a payment and nothing about marketing. Whether an identifier exists depends entirely on whether the cart passed it into a custom field when creating the transaction, and legacy carts generally did not.

Leak #02

A legacy gateway under a legacy cart

Authorize.net is usually the oldest thing in the stack. The custom fields exist and almost nobody populates them, so the transaction arrives with no trace of the campaign that produced it.

Leak #03

View-through conversions on the open internet

A large share of what a DSP claims is view-through: the person saw a display impression and later converted without clicking. Some of that is real influence and some of it is coincidence, and no post-click reporting can separate them. Treat the click-attributed number as the floor and prove the rest with a holdout.

Leak #04

Nothing reconciles afterwards

An upload that succeeds is not an upload that matched. The Trade Desk reports match rates on uploaded conversions. Read the match rate — a low one means your authenticated share is the constraint, and no amount of pipeline work will change that.

Architecture

How Authorize.net and The Trade Desk actually connect

Two systems that know nothing about each other. Everything below exists to give them one shared reference.

  1. Step 1

    Authorize.net holds the truth

Authorisation reserves funds and settlement moves them. Authorize.net batches settlement, usually daily, so a transaction authorised late in the day settles the next — which shifts revenue across a date boundary if you report the wrong state.

  2. Step 2

The Trade Desk needs a click to match

The Trade Desk needs the conversion with a UID2 or a hashed email it can resolve, plus the value and timestamp. Conversions from anonymous visitors cannot be matched at all.

  3. Step 3

    The identifier is the bridge

Unified ID 2.0, derived from a hashed email, captured at the visit and carried into the Authorize.net transaction. Without it there is nothing to join on and no tool fixes that.

  4. Step 4

    The event source decides reliability

Fire on settled, not authorised. Batching means the two carry different dates, and reporting on authorisation puts revenue in the wrong day.

  5. Step 5

    Deduplication at the destination

Deduplication is on your conversion identifier. Because open-internet buying frequently runs alongside search and social, the more consequential deduplication is across platforms rather than within this one.

Diagnose it honestly

Working vs. broken, side by side

Both states look identical from the The Trade Desk dashboard, which is why this runs for months before anyone notices.

Normal — not a fault

  • Unified ID 2.0, derived from a hashed email present on the transaction

Visible on the record itself in Authorize.net, not merely captured somewhere on the site.

  • Sent from the Authorize.net webhook on settlement

Server-side, so it does not depend on the customer's browser still being there.

  • Deduplicated correctly

Deduplication is on your conversion identifier. Because open-internet buying frequently runs alongside search and social, the more consequential deduplication is across platforms rather than within this one.

  • Reconciles with the source

The Trade Desk's count and Authorize.net's records agree within a few percent over a closed window.

Actually broken

  • Unified ID 2.0, derived from a hashed email missing on most records

The gateway sees a payment and nothing about marketing. Whether an identifier exists depends entirely on whether the cart passed it into a custom field when creating the transaction, and legacy carts generally did not.

  • Sent from the browser

Anyone who closes the tab, blocks the script or converts without a page load is invisible. Authorize.net is usually the oldest thing in the stack. The custom fields exist and almost nobody populates them, so the transaction arrives with no trace of the campaign that produced it.

  • Counted twice, or not at all

A large share of what a DSP claims is view-through: the person saw a display impression and later converted without clicking. Some of that is real influence and some of it is coincidence, and no post-click reporting can separate them. Treat the click-attributed number as the floor and prove the rest with a holdout.

  • Nobody has reconciled it

The dashboard shows a number and no one has compared it to Authorize.net. A wrong number that nobody checks is indistinguishable from a right one.

Diagnostic sequence

Diagnostic order

Each step rules out a class of cause. Run them in order and the last one usually has a single explanation standing.

  1. 1

Count transactions carrying Unified ID 2.0, derived from a hashed email

The ceiling on everything else. Do this before debugging anything downstream.

  2. 2

Follow one real conversion end to end

From the ad click through Authorize.net and into The Trade Desk.

  3. 3

Open a settled transaction and read its user-defined fields

Empty means the cart never passed anything, which is the usual finding and cannot be recovered retroactively.

  4. 4

Split reported conversions into click-through and view-through

If the great majority are view-through, the honest next step is an incrementality test rather than a bid adjustment.

  5. 5

Read the match rate, not the success message

The Trade Desk reports match rates on uploaded conversions. Read the match rate — a low one means your authenticated share is the constraint, and no amount of pipeline work will change that.

Source-of-truth validation

How it gets proven

Against Authorize.net's own records, not against either platform's dashboard.

Source of truthAuthorize.net's settled transactions for the same window, not authorisations.
  • Unified ID 2.0, derived from a hashed email confirmed present on a live transaction.
  • A real conversion followed from click through Authorize.net to The Trade Desk.
  • Matched conversions reconciled against your own order records, with the click-through and view-through split stated.
  • A transaction confirmed to carry the identifier through authorisation into settlement.
  • Reconciled over a fully closed window, matched per record rather than on totals.
  • Re-checked 30 days later.

Straight talk

When you don't need this

Worth reading before paying anyone, including us.

  • If The Trade Desk already reports conversions that reconcile against Authorize.net's records within a few percent, this join is working and there is nothing to buy.
  • Measure identifier coverage yourself first — pull your last hundred transactions and count how many carry Unified ID 2.0, derived from a hashed email. Ten minutes, free, and it tells you whether any of this is worth doing.
  • If the cart on top of Authorize.net already reports orders accurately, work at the order layer — it is closer to the customer and easier to change.
  • If you cannot collect email addresses from a meaningful share of your buyers, UID2 has little to work with and the open internet is not yet an addressable channel for you.

Who this is for

Honest about who we’re a fit for.

We don’t take every project. Here’s how to tell if we’re right for you.

Good fit

You’re a great fit if…

  • You run Authorize.net → The Trade Desk (or are migrating to it)
  • You spend $5K+/month on paid ads (Meta, Google, TikTok, Microsoft, LinkedIn)
  • Your reported ROAS doesn’t match what your bank account is saying
  • You want to own your tracking stack — no monthly SaaS fees forever
  • You have 2–4 days to do this once and never think about it again
Not a fit

Skip us if…

  • You spend less than $500/month on paid ads (browser pixel is fine)
  • You want a SaaS dashboard with monthly fees forever (Triple Whale, Hyros)
  • You need attribution modeling — we fix the data foundation, not multi-touch reports
  • You want a 6-month enterprise consulting engagement (we ship in 4 days)
  • You expect us to manage your ad accounts (we don’t — that’s a different service)

If you’re still unsure, book the call anyway— we’ll tell you straight whether we can help.

What you get

What gets built

Item 01

Identifier capture into Authorize.net

Pass the click identifier into the transaction's user-defined fields when your application creates the charge. Authorize.net preserves them through settlement and into the transaction detail record.

Item 02

Event source: the Authorize.net webhook on settlement

Fire on settled, not authorised. Batching means the two carry different dates, and reporting on authorisation puts revenue in the wrong day.

Item 03

Dispatch to The Trade Desk

Server-side conversion upload with the hashed identity and value, from your order system.

Item 04

Reversals where they exist

Voids, refunds and chargebacks are all recorded against the original transaction and carry its user-defined fields.

Pricing

Pick the package that fits your ad spend

Fixed-fee, no surprises. If your ad spend is meaningful,server-side tracking is what we recommend— it’s the only setup that survives iOS, Safari ITP and ad blockers.

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Why aren't my Authorize.net conversions showing in The Trade Desk?

Almost always because Unified ID 2.0, derived from a hashed email never reached the Authorize.net transaction. The gateway sees a payment and nothing about marketing. Whether an identifier exists depends entirely on whether the cart passed it into a custom field when creating the transaction, and legacy carts generally did not. Measure coverage before debugging the dispatch.

02What identifier does The Trade Desk need?

UID2 is built from a hashed and salted email address rather than from a cookie, which is the point: it is designed to survive third-party cookie deprecation. It also means the identifier only exists for people who gave you an email, so your addressable share is capped by your own authenticated traffic, not by the platform.

03Where should the event come from?

The Authorize.net webhook on settlement. Fire on settled, not authorised. Batching means the two carry different dates, and reporting on authorisation puts revenue in the wrong day.

04How do I know it worked?

The Trade Desk reports match rates on uploaded conversions. Read the match rate — a low one means your authenticated share is the constraint, and no amount of pipeline work will change that.
