VWO → Marketing Cloud · Conversion tracking

Connecting VWO to Salesforce Marketing Cloud

VWO runs tests on marketing pages specifically, which puts it directly in the paid traffic path and makes the interaction between testing and attribution unavoidable. Marketing Cloud is a different product from Salesforce CRM with a different identity model, which catches out almost everyone who assumes a contact in one is a contact in the other. The join between them succeeds or fails on one thing: whether the Subscriber Key reaches the VWO variation before the conversion happens, because Marketing Cloud can only match a conversion it can tie back to a click it recognizes.

The problem

Why this join usually fails

VWO → Marketing Cloud-specific issues
Leak #01

The Subscriber Key never reaches VWO

The single most common cause. Synchronous test rendering can delay page load; asynchronous rendering causes flicker. Both push the identifier-capture script later in the sequence than it should be.

Leak #02

Three tools reporting three different conversion counts

VWO, the ad platform and the CRM will each produce a different number for the same week, because each defines a visitor, a conversion and a window differently. Reconciling them requires one source of truth, and it is not the testing tool.

Leak #03

Two identity models treated as one

Marketing Cloud's Subscriber Key and CRM's Contact ID are separate concepts, and Contact Builder's configuration decides whether they relate at all. Getting this wrong does not produce an error — it produces a customer who exists twice, receives everything twice, and appears in reporting as two people.

Leak #04

Nothing reconciles afterwards

An upload that succeeds is not an upload that matched. Check the subscriber record and the journey history, not the API response. A successful insert into an unwatched data extension looks identical to a successful one into the right extension.

Architecture

How VWO and Marketing Cloud actually connect

Two systems that know nothing about each other. Everything below exists to give them one shared reference.

  1. Step 1

    VWO holds the truth

VWO's own goal conversion is measured on its terms, in its window, against its visitor definition. It will not match your ad platform's figure and it is not supposed to.

  2. Step 2

Salesforce Marketing Cloud needs a click to match

The Subscriber Key, the data extension the journey listens to, and the fields its decision splits reference. An event landing in the wrong data extension will be stored correctly and trigger nothing.

  3. Step 3

    The identifier is the bridge

The Subscriber Key, captured at the visit and carried into the VWO variation. Without it there is nothing to join on and no tool fixes that.

  4. Step 4

    The event source decides reliability

Send the downstream outcome — a qualified lead or a settled order — with the variation attached, rather than the on-page goal VWO records.

  5. Step 5

    Deduplication at the destination

Marketing Cloud does not deduplicate journey entries for you. A record inserted twice can enter a journey twice, and because journeys span email, SMS and push the duplicate reaches the customer more than once.

Diagnose it honestly

Working vs. broken, side by side

Both states look identical from the Marketing Cloud dashboard, which is why this runs for months before anyone notices.

Normal — not a fault

  • The Subscriber Key present on the variation

Visible on the record itself in VWO, not merely captured somewhere on the site.

  • Sent from your lead or order system

Server-side, so it does not depend on the customer's browser still being there.

  • Deduplicated correctly

Marketing Cloud does not deduplicate journey entries for you. A record inserted twice can enter a journey twice, and because journeys span email, SMS and push the duplicate reaches the customer more than once.

  • Reconciles with the source

Marketing Cloud's count and VWO's records agree within a few percent over a closed window.

Actually broken

  • The Subscriber Key missing on most records

Synchronous test rendering can delay page load; asynchronous rendering causes flicker. Both push the identifier-capture script later in the sequence than it should be.

  • Sent from the browser

Anyone who closes the tab, blocks the script or converts without a page load is invisible. VWO, the ad platform and the CRM will each produce a different number for the same week, because each defines a visitor, a conversion and a window differently. Reconciling them requires one source of truth, and it is not the testing tool.

  • Counted twice, or not at all

Marketing Cloud's Subscriber Key and CRM's Contact ID are separate concepts, and Contact Builder's configuration decides whether they relate at all. Getting this wrong does not produce an error — it produces a customer who exists twice, receives everything twice, and appears in reporting as two people.

  • Nobody has reconciled it

The dashboard shows a number and no one has compared it to VWO. A wrong number that nobody checks is indistinguishable from a right one.

Diagnostic sequence

Diagnostic order

Each step rules out a class of cause. Run them in order and the last one usually has a single explanation standing.

  1. 1

Count variations carrying the Subscriber Key

The ceiling on everything else. Do this before debugging anything downstream.

  2. 2

Follow one real conversion end to end

From the ad click through VWO and into Marketing Cloud.

  3. 3

Check the load order of the testing library against identifier capture

If the test renders first, some share of identifiers is being lost on slower connections, and that share is not random across variations.

  4. 4

Confirm what Subscriber Key is actually set to in this org

Before sending anything. It is a configuration decision made once, often years ago, and every integration built afterwards inherits it.

  5. 5

Read the match rate, not the success message

Check the subscriber record and the journey history, not the API response. A successful insert into an unwatched data extension looks identical to a successful one into the right extension.

Source-of-truth validation

How it gets proven

Against VWO's own records, not against either platform's dashboard.

Source of truthYour lead or order system, joined to the variation the visitor saw.
  • The Subscriber Key confirmed present on a live variation.
  • A real conversion followed from click through VWO to Marketing Cloud.
  • Records confirmed on single subscriber records in the correct data extension, with the triggered journey verified in a non-production business unit first.
  • Downstream outcomes reconciled per variation against imported conversions.
  • Reconciled over a fully closed window, matched per record rather than on totals.
  • Re-checked 30 days later.

Straight talk

When you don't need this

Worth reading before paying anyone, including us.

  • If Marketing Cloud already reports conversions that reconcile against VWO's records within a few percent, this join is working and there is nothing to buy.
  • Measure identifier coverage yourself first — pull your last hundred variations and count how many carry the Subscriber Key. Ten minutes, free, and it tells you whether any of this is worth doing.
  • Not testing paid landing pages means no interaction, and no reason to integrate the two systems.
  • If you are on Salesforce CRM but sending email through a simpler platform, adding Marketing Cloud brings an identity model to reconcile that you currently do not have to think about.

Who this is for

Honest about who we’re a fit for.

We don’t take every project. Here’s how to tell if we’re right for you.

Good fit

You’re a great fit if…

  • You run VWO → Marketing Cloud (or are migrating to it)
  • You spend $5K+/month on paid ads (Meta, Google, TikTok, Microsoft, LinkedIn)
  • Your reported ROAS doesn’t match what your bank account is saying
  • You want to own your tracking stack — no monthly SaaS fees forever
  • You have 2–4 days to do this once and never think about it again
Not a fit

Skip us if…

  • You spend less than $500/month on paid ads (browser pixel is fine)
  • You want a SaaS dashboard with monthly fees forever (Triple Whale, Hyros)
  • You need attribution modeling — we fix the data foundation, not multi-touch reports
  • You want a 6-month enterprise consulting engagement (we ship in 4 days)
  • You expect us to manage your ad accounts (we don’t — that’s a different service)

If you’re still unsure, book the call anyway— we’ll tell you straight whether we can help.

Item 04

Reversals where they exist

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Why aren't my VWO conversions showing in Marketing Cloud?

Almost always because the Subscriber Key never reached the VWO variation. Synchronous test rendering can delay page load; asynchronous rendering causes flicker. Both push the identifier-capture script later in the sequence than it should be. Measure coverage before debugging the dispatch.

02What identifier does Marketing Cloud need?

Marketing Cloud identifies people by Subscriber Key, which you define. It is not the CRM Contact ID unless somebody deliberately made it so, and in many orgs the two are unrelated. Sending an event keyed on the wrong one creates a second subscriber rather than updating the first, which splits the person across two journeys.

03Where should the event come from?

Your lead or order system. Send the downstream outcome — a qualified lead or a settled order — with the variation attached, rather than the on-page goal VWO records.

04How do I know it worked?

Check the subscriber record and the journey history, not the API response. A successful insert into an unwatched data extension looks identical to a successful one into the right extension.
