Conversion tracking for Ventrata checkouts

Ventrata's checkout loads by script on the operator's own site and pushes a full set of GA4-format ecommerce events into the dataLayer, right through to purchase, plus its own steps such as select_date, select_pickup and upgrade_ticket. That's unusually good raw material for a tour or attraction. Where it goes wrong is duplication — the native GA4 field and your GTM tags both counting a purchase — and in treating gift vouchers, booking edits and upgrades as new sales.

Ventrata · what breaks

What goes wrong on Ventrata

  1. 01

The native GA4 ID and GTM both reporting purchase

Revenue in GA4 lands doubled, and Google Ads imports the inflated figure.

  2. 02

edit_booking or upgrade_ticket treated as a new order

A guest moving their time slot isn't a fresh sale.

  3. 03

Gift vouchers counted as tour bookings

The voucher is revenue today; the visit happens whenever it's redeemed.

  4. 04

    Meta left to guesswork

Ventrata's tracking manual doesn't confirm a native Meta Pixel, so it's often bolted on inconsistently.

Ventrata · the fix

What changes — Ventrata

  • One purchase, one source, every platform

Built on purchase or ventrata-order-created, and deduplicated server-side.

  • Units and option on the conversion

Adults, children and add-ons, so party size and value are both visible.

  • Gifts and edits reported on their own

Out of acquisition, still visible as revenue.

Ventrata · architecture

What Ventrata actually lets you do

Ventrata documents a detailed event layer in its tracking manual. Meta is the one piece we haven't confirmed.

  1. 1

    GA4-format dataLayer events

    view_item, add_to_cart, view_cart, begin_checkout, add_payment_info and purchase.

  2. 2

    Custom checkout steps

    select_unit, select_date, select_time, select_pickup, upgrade_ticket, edit_booking, gift_added_to_cart and view_option_select.

  3. 3

    DOM and JavaScript events

ventrata-order-created, ventrata-booking-removed, ventrata-checkout-closed and others, for listeners outside the dataLayer.

  4. 4

GA4 Measurement ID field and Segment integration

Native routes that can overlap with your own GTM setup.

  5. 5

Check whether a Meta Pixel is supported natively

Not confirmed in the tracking manual; plan Meta through GTM and the server container.

Ventrata · diagnose

Where Ventrata tracking breaks, in diagnostic order

With this many events available, the failures are almost always about which ones are used, and how many times.

  1. 01

Look for a Measurement ID in Ventrata and a GA4 tag in GTM

Both present means purchases are counted twice.

  2. 02

Compare purchase and ventrata-order-created on one order

Trigger on one of them, never both.

  3. 03

Buy a gift voucher and watch what fires

If it reports as a standard ticket sale, acquisition is inflated.

  4. 04

    Edit an existing booking

Confirm no second purchase goes out.

  5. 05

Inspect units and value in the purchase payload

Party size should be readable for every order.

Source of truth

Ventrata's order records — orders by sale date, with units, options and value

  • One purchase per order at GA4, Google Ads and Meta.
  • Units by type and order value matched to the Ventrata order.
  • A gift voucher purchase confirmed as its own conversion.
  • An edit_booking and an upgrade_ticket confirmed not to create a new sale.
  • Browser and server purchase deduplicated on a shared event ID.
  • Reconciled per order over a fully closed window.
  • Re-checked 30 days later, and after any Ventrata checkout release.

Ventrata · free audit

Ventrata · when not to buy

When you don't need this on Ventrata

Ventrata's event layer is good enough that some operators only need an audit.

  • If you only use GA4 and the native Measurement ID is the only thing installed, Ventrata's own events may already be right. Check for duplicates and stop there.
  • If Segment already routes Ventrata events to your ad platforms with deduplication in place, the work is an audit, not a rebuild.
  • If most of your sales come through resellers rather than your own site, the checkout you control is a small share and the stakes are lower.
  • If you don't advertise on Meta, the biggest gap on this platform doesn't apply to you.

FAQ

Ventrata questions, answered

Usually deduplication and routing. The event itself is good; the problem is that it often reaches GA4 twice and Meta not at all.
