Trustpilot → Google Ads · Conversion tracking
Connecting Trustpilot to Google Ads
Trustpilot holds verified-buyer reviews tied to real orders, which makes it a source of identity and repeat-purchase signal — and emphatically not a source of conversions. Google Ads knows what you spent and which click it came from, and nothing at all about what happened afterwards. The join between them succeeds or fails on one thing: whether the GCLID reaches the Trustpilot review invitation before the conversion happens, because Google Ads can only match a conversion it can tie back to a click it recognizes.

Why this join usually fails
The GCLID never reaches Trustpilot
The single most common cause. Reviews are submitted on Trustpilot's domain, days or weeks after the purchase, on whatever device the customer happens to be holding. Nothing about that path carries your identifier.
Review submissions configured as conversions
It happens constantly and it is always wrong. A review is a post-purchase event; optimizing toward it tells the platform to find people who leave reviews, and it will double-count every buyer who does.
The conversion action is the wrong type
Uploads against a standard website conversion action fail. The action has to be created as 'Import' — and existing actions cannot be converted, so this is discovered late and requires starting a new action with no history.
Nothing reconciles afterwards
An upload that succeeds is not an upload that matched. Google Ads reports uploads in Goals → Conversions → Uploads, with rows accepted and rows failed. A green result means the file parsed, not that the clicks matched. The number to watch is how many conversions actually appear against campaigns afterwards.
Architecture
How Trustpilot and Google Ads actually connect
Two systems that know nothing about each other. Everything below exists to give them one shared reference.
Step 1
Trustpilot holds the truth
The order is the truth; the review is a downstream event on top of it. Trustpilot is useful here because the invitation carries the order reference, which is a clean join key back to the transaction that actually earned the money.
Step 2
Google Ads needs a click to match
Google Ads matches an uploaded conversion back to a click using the GCLID. The conversion action must be created as an import type — an upload against a website-tag conversion action is rejected. Uploads must also land inside Google's window: the click has to be within the last 90 days.
Step 3
The identifier is the bridge
The GCLID, captured at the visit and carried into the Trustpilot review invitation. Without it there is nothing to join on and no tool fixes that.
Step 4
The event source decides reliability
Send purchases. Use review status to build audiences of satisfied buyers, which is a genuinely good use of this data and a completely different job from conversion import.
Step 5
Deduplication at the destination
Google deduplicates on the combination of GCLID, conversion action and conversion time. Uploading the same click twice against the same action at the same timestamp is rejected rather than double-counted, but uploading it against a second conversion action counts twice — which is how most double-counting here actually happens.
Diagnose it honestly
Working vs. broken, side by side
Both states look identical from the Google Ads dashboard, which is why this runs for months before anyone notices.
Normal — not a fault
The GCLID present on the review
Visible on the record itself in Trustpilot, not merely captured somewhere on the site.
Sent from your order system, enriched by Trustpilot
Server-side, so it does not depend on the customer's browser still being there.
Deduplicated correctly
Google deduplicates on the combination of GCLID, conversion action and conversion time. Uploading the same click twice against the same action at the same timestamp is rejected rather than double-counted, but uploading it against a second conversion action counts twice — which is how most double-counting here actually happens.
Reconciles with the source
Google Ads's count and Trustpilot's records agree within a few percent over a closed window.
Actually broken
The GCLID missing on most records
Reviews are submitted on Trustpilot's domain, days or weeks after the purchase, on whatever device the customer happens to be holding. Nothing about that path carries your identifier.
Sent from the browser
Anyone who closes the tab, blocks the script or converts without a page load is invisible. It happens constantly and it is always wrong. A review is a post-purchase event; optimizing toward it tells the platform to find people who leave reviews, and it will double-count every buyer who does.
Counted twice, or not at all
Uploads against a standard website conversion action fail. The action has to be created as 'Import' — and existing actions cannot be converted, so this is discovered late and requires starting a new action with no history.
Nobody has reconciled it
The dashboard shows a number and no one has compared it to Trustpilot. A wrong number that nobody checks is indistinguishable from a right one.
Diagnostic sequence
Diagnostic order
Each step rules out a class of cause. Run them in order and the last one usually has a single explanation standing.
- 1
Count reviews carrying the GCLID
The ceiling on everything else. Do this before debugging anything downstream.
- 2
Follow one real conversion end to end
From the ad click through Trustpilot and into Google Ads.
- 3
Check the conversion list for a review event
If one is there and it is set to optimize rather than observe, that is the finding. Remove it before anything else.
- 4
Check the conversion action type and the upload diagnostics
In Google Ads, Goals → Conversions → Uploads shows every upload with its error rows. Read the errors rather than the success count; a file can import successfully with most rows rejected.
- 5
Read the match rate, not the success message
Google Ads reports uploads in Goals → Conversions → Uploads, with rows accepted and rows failed. A green result means the file parsed, not that the clicks matched. The number to watch is how many conversions actually appear against campaigns afterwards.
Source-of-truth validation
How it gets proven
Against Trustpilot's own records, not against either platform's dashboard.
- The GCLID confirmed present on a live review.
- A real conversion followed from click through Trustpilot to Google Ads.
- The Uploads diagnostics read row by row, with the accepted count reconciled against conversions appearing in campaign reporting.
- Purchases reconciled against imported conversions, with review events demonstrably excluded from the count.
- Reconciled over a fully closed window, matched per record rather than on totals.
- Re-checked 30 days later.
Straight talk
When you don't need this
Worth reading before paying anyone, including us.
- If Google Ads already reports conversions that reconcile against Trustpilot's records within a few percent, this join is working and there is nothing to buy.
- Measure identifier coverage yourself first — pull your last hundred reviews and count how many carry the GCLID. Ten minutes, free, and it tells you whether any of this is worth doing.
- If you only want star ratings in your ads, that is a Google Seller Ratings feed, not a conversion integration. Different job, far less work.
- If your sales close inside a few days and your website tag already reports accurately, you may not need offline import at all. It exists to solve the delay between click and revenue.
Who this is for
Honest about who we’re a fit for.
We don’t take every project. Here’s how to tell if we’re right for you.
You’re a great fit if…
- You run Trustpilot → Google Ads (or are migrating to it)
- You spend $5K+/month on paid ads (Meta, Google, TikTok, Microsoft, LinkedIn)
- Your reported ROAS doesn’t match what your bank account is saying
- You want to own your tracking stack — no monthly SaaS fees forever
- You have 2–4 days to do this once and never think about it again
Skip us if…
- You spend less than $500/month on paid ads (browser pixel is fine)
- You want a SaaS dashboard with monthly fees forever (Triple Whale, Hyros)
- You need attribution modeling — we fix the data foundation, not multi-touch reports
- You want a 6-month enterprise consulting engagement (we ship in 4 days)
- You expect us to manage your ad accounts (we don’t — that’s a different service)
If you’re still unsure, book the call anyway— we’ll tell you straight whether we can help.
What working looks like
The GCLID on every review
Server-sideCaptured before the conversion and stored where it survives.
Conversions arriving in Google Ads
8+ EMQConversions appear against the campaign, ad group and keyword that produced the click, with the value you sent — which is what lets Smart Bidding optimize toward revenue instead of toward form fills.
Reconciled against the source
DedupedTrustpilot's own records are the reference, not either dashboard.
What gets built
Identifier capture into Trustpilot
Do not try to carry one. Join on the order reference already present in the invitation, and use the review as an attribute of a known customer rather than as an event to attribute.
Event source: your order system, enriched by Trustpilot
Send purchases. Use review status to build audiences of satisfied buyers, which is a genuinely good use of this data and a completely different job from conversion import.
Dispatch to Google Ads
Offline Conversion Import through the Google Ads API, or a scheduled upload. Enhanced conversions for leads where GCLID coverage is poor and you have consented email addresses.
Reversals where they exist
Not applicable — a deleted review does not reverse a sale.
Pick the package that fits your ad spend
Fixed-fee, no surprises. If your ad spend is meaningful,server-side tracking is what we recommend— it’s the only setup that survives iOS, Safari ITP and ad blockers.
Browser-side starter
Wires the join and verifies it on a live conversion. Honest about its ceiling where the source can only be read from the browser.
- The join built and tested end to end
- Verified on a real conversion
- Reconciled against the source's own records
- Written handover
1st-party server-side
Save $18K–$120K over 5 years vs Triple Whale / Hyros
The join built server-side from the source's own records, so it does not depend on a browser being present when the conversion happens.
- Events sourced from the system of record, not the browser
- Identifier captured and persisted end to end
- Deduplicated at the destination
- Reversals wired where the source supports them
- 95%+ accuracy guaranteed in writing

Got questions?
The honestanswers.
No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.
01Why aren't my Trustpilot conversions showing in Google Ads?
Almost always because the GCLID never reached the Trustpilot review invitation. Reviews are submitted on Trustpilot's domain, days or weeks after the purchase, on whatever device the customer happens to be holding. Nothing about that path carries your identifier. Measure coverage before debugging the dispatch.
02What identifier does Google Ads need?
The GCLID — the click ID Google appends to your landing page URL when auto-tagging is on. For iOS App campaigns and some Shopping traffic you will see GBRAID or WBRAID instead, and those behave differently: WBRAID cannot be used with user-provided data in the same way, and neither joins to an individual user. Enhanced conversions for leads is the alternative path, matching on hashed email or phone rather than a click ID, and it is the right choice when GCLID coverage is poor.
03Where should the event come from?
Your order system, enriched by Trustpilot. Send purchases. Use review status to build audiences of satisfied buyers, which is a genuinely good use of this data and a completely different job from conversion import.
04How do I know it worked?
Google Ads reports uploads in Goals → Conversions → Uploads, with rows accepted and rows failed. A green result means the file parsed, not that the clicks matched. The number to watch is how many conversions actually appear against campaigns afterwards.
