MemberPress → GA4 · Conversion tracking

Connecting MemberPress to GA4

MemberPress runs memberships inside WordPress, which means you own the database and inherit every WordPress problem alongside it. GA4 is where the business goes to understand what happened, which makes an unattributed conversion there expensive in decisions rather than in ad spend. The join between them succeeds or fails on one thing: whether the GA4 client_id reaches the MemberPress subscription before the conversion happens, because GA4 can only match a conversion it can tie back to a click it recognizes.

The problem

Why this join usually fails

MemberPress → GA4-specific issues
Leak #01

The GA4 client_id never reaches MemberPress

The single most common cause. Page caching serves a cached render to the visitor, so anything relying on a dynamically populated field can silently fail. The identifier has to be captured and stored as subscription metadata server-side, not carried in a rendered page.

Leak #02

Caching between the visitor and your code

The same problem that breaks WooCommerce tracking. A cached page never runs your capture logic, and the failure is invisible because the site still works.

Leak #03

Everything lands under (direct)/(none)

The classic Measurement Protocol symptom, and it always means the same thing: the client_id was missing or wrong, so GA4 had no session to attach the event to and invented a new user.

Leak #04

Nothing reconciles afterwards

An upload that succeeds is not an upload that matched. GA4 DebugView shows events arriving with their parameters, and Realtime confirms the user and session they attached to. Neither tells you whether you are double-counting — for that, compare GA4's conversion count against the source system's record for the same window.

Architecture

How MemberPress and GA4 actually connect

Two systems that know nothing about each other. Everything below exists to give them one shared reference.

  1. Step 1

    MemberPress holds the truth

Owning the database is the advantage — you can query it directly and reconcile without depending on anyone. The disadvantage is that caching, plugin conflicts and optimisation tools sit between your visitor and your code.

  2. Step 2

GA4 needs a click to match

GA4 needs the client_id to attach a server event to the user and session that produced the click. Without it there is no attribution to inherit and the event is orphaned.

  3. Step 3

    The identifier is the bridge

The GA4 client_id, captured at the visit and carried into the MemberPress subscription. Without it there is nothing to join on and no tool fixes that.

  4. Step 4

    The event source decides reliability

Fire server-side from the PHP hook, which runs regardless of caching, and value recurring memberships over their expected life.

  5. Step 5

    Deduplication at the destination

GA4 has no built-in deduplication for Measurement Protocol. If the browser also sends the event, it counts twice. The only reliable approach is to decide per event which side sends it, and enforce that decision — GA4 will not protect you from your own duplicates.

Diagnose it honestly

Working vs. broken, side by side

Both states look identical from the GA4 dashboard, which is why this runs for months before anyone notices.

Normal — not a fault

  • The GA4 client_id present on the membership

Visible on the record itself in MemberPress, not merely captured somewhere on the site.

  • Sent from the MemberPress transaction-completed hook

Server-side, so it does not depend on the customer's browser still being there.

  • Deduplicated correctly

GA4 has no built-in deduplication for Measurement Protocol. If the browser also sends the event, it counts twice. The only reliable approach is to decide per event which side sends it, and enforce that decision — GA4 will not protect you from your own duplicates.

  • Reconciles with the source

GA4's count and MemberPress's records agree within a few percent over a closed window.

Actually broken

  • The GA4 client_id missing on most records

Page caching serves a cached render to the visitor, so anything relying on a dynamically populated field can silently fail. The identifier has to be captured and stored as subscription metadata server-side, not carried in a rendered page.

  • Sent from the browser

Anyone who closes the tab, blocks the script or converts without a page load is invisible. The same problem that breaks WooCommerce tracking. A cached page never runs your capture logic, and the failure is invisible because the site still works.

  • Counted twice, or not at all

The classic Measurement Protocol symptom, and it always means the same thing: the client_id was missing or wrong, so GA4 had no session to attach the event to and invented a new user.

  • Nobody has reconciled it

The dashboard shows a number and no one has compared it to MemberPress. A wrong number that nobody checks is indistinguishable from a right one.

Diagnostic sequence

Diagnostic order

Each step rules out a class of cause. Run them in order and the last one usually has a single explanation standing.

  1. 1

Count memberships carrying the GA4 client_id

The ceiling on everything else. Do this before debugging anything downstream.

  2. 2

Follow one real conversion end to end

From the ad click through MemberPress and into GA4.

  3. 3

Submit a test signup through a fully cached page

Not as a logged-in admin, which bypasses the cache. If the metadata is empty on the cached path, caching is your cause.

  4. 4

Check whether server events carry a session and a source

In GA4 Realtime or DebugView, find the event and look at its session and traffic source. A brand-new user with no source on every server event is the missing-client_id signature.

  5. 5

Read the match rate, not the success message

GA4 DebugView shows events arriving with their parameters, and Realtime confirms the user and session they attached to. Neither tells you whether you are double-counting — for that, compare GA4's conversion count against the source system's record for the same window.

Source-of-truth validation

How it gets proven

Against MemberPress's own records, not against either platform's dashboard.

Source of truthMemberPress transactions and subscriptions in your own WordPress database, for the same window.
  • The GA4 client_id confirmed present on a live membership.
  • A real conversion followed from click through MemberPress to GA4.
  • Server events confirmed in DebugView attaching to an existing session with the original traffic source intact.
  • Subscription metadata confirmed populated on a signup made as an anonymous visitor through cache.
  • Reconciled over a fully closed window, matched per record rather than on totals.
  • Re-checked 30 days later.

Straight talk

When you don't need this

Worth reading before paying anyone, including us.

  • If GA4 already reports conversions that reconcile against MemberPress's records within a few percent, this join is working and there is nothing to buy.
  • Measure identifier coverage yourself first — pull your last hundred memberships and count how many carry the GA4 client_id. Ten minutes, free, and it tells you whether any of this is worth doing.
  • If you run no caching layer and a single membership tier, a developer can wire this in an afternoon.
  • GA4 is reporting, not bidding. If your problem is ad platform optimization, fix the ad platform destination first — GA4 will not change what any campaign does.

Who this is for

Honest about who we’re a fit for.

We don’t take every project. Here’s how to tell if we’re right for you.

Good fit

You’re a great fit if…

  • You run MemberPress → GA4 (or are migrating to it)
  • You spend $5K+/month on paid ads (Meta, Google, TikTok, Microsoft, LinkedIn)
  • Your reported ROAS doesn’t match what your bank account is saying
  • You want to own your tracking stack — no monthly SaaS fees forever
  • You have 2–4 days to do this once and never think about it again
Not a fit

Skip us if…

  • You spend less than $500/month on paid ads (browser pixel is fine)
  • You want a SaaS dashboard with monthly fees forever (Triple Whale, Hyros)
  • You need attribution modeling — we fix the data foundation, not multi-touch reports
  • You want a 6-month enterprise consulting engagement (we ship in 4 days)
  • You expect us to manage your ad accounts (we don’t — that’s a different service)

If you’re still unsure, book the call anyway— we’ll tell you straight whether we can help.

The outcome

Conversions arriving in GA4

8+ EMQ

Conversions appear in GA4 attributed to the original session's source and medium, so acquisition reporting reflects what actually drove revenue.

What you get

What gets built

Item 01

Identifier capture into MemberPress

Capture the identifier and write it to subscription metadata through a MemberPress or WordPress hook, so it lives in your database rather than in a page that might be cached.

Item 02

Event source: the MemberPress transaction-completed hook

Fire server-side from the PHP hook, which runs regardless of caching, and value recurring memberships over their expected life.

Item 03

Dispatch to GA4

Measurement Protocol events with the client_id, session_id and the correct measurement ID and API secret, sent server-side.

Item 04

Reversals where they exist

Cancellations and refunds are recorded against the subscription and should reduce the reported figure.

Pricing

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Why aren't my MemberPress conversions showing in GA4?

Almost always because the GA4 client_id never reached the MemberPress subscription. Page caching serves a cached render to the visitor, so anything relying on a dynamically populated field can silently fail. The identifier has to be captured and stored as subscription metadata server-side, not carried in a rendered page. Measure coverage before debugging the dispatch.

02What identifier does GA4 need?

The client_id, from the _ga cookie. Measurement Protocol events without it are rejected or create a brand-new user with no session and no source, which is how server events end up filed under (direct)/(none) and make paid channels look worse than they are. Send session_id alongside it so the event joins the existing session, and include engagement_time_msec or the event may not appear as expected in reports.

03Where should the event come from?

The MemberPress transaction-completed hook. Fire server-side from the PHP hook, which runs regardless of caching, and value recurring memberships over their expected life.

04How do I know it worked?

GA4 DebugView shows events arriving with their parameters, and Realtime confirms the user and session they attached to. Neither tells you whether you are double-counting — for that, compare GA4's conversion count against the source system's record for the same window.
