Spotify · Webinar registration → attendance · Conversion tracking

How to track webinar registration to attendance for Spotify Ads

Registrations are easy to buy and attendance rates vary enormously by channel, which makes registration a poor optimization target and attendance a genuinely useful one. The complication is timing: the webinar happens days after the click, on a platform you don't own, and the attendance record lives there rather than on your site. On Spotify Ads the specifics that matter are that no click identifier on most inventory, the measurement mechanism (the Spotify Pixel and Ad Analytics), and There is no click identifier to deduplicate against, so the usual event_id pairing does not apply in the same way. There is no chain to keep alive here, because no click identifier on most inventory — so the question is not whether the identifier survives to the registrant record in your webinar platform and CRM, it is whether you can show the channel moved anything at all.

The problem

Where this funnel usually breaks

Spotify · Webinar registration → attendance-specific issues
Leak #01

The identifier doesn't reach the registration

Webinar platforms are usually a different domain. It has to be passed as a hidden field or link parameter.

Leak #02

Registration optimized as the conversion

Attendance rates differ by a wide margin between channels, and registration-optimized bidding finds the worst of them.

Leak #03

Attendance never sent back

The platform exposes the webhook and most setups never wire it, so the useful signal stays inside the webinar tool.

Specific to Spotify × Webinar registration → attendance

Spotify webinar ads: a vanity URL and a source field

Spotify audio has no click identifier, so webinar attendance from Spotify is measured with a vanity URL read in the ad, a source tagged on the registrant record, and attendance read from your webinar platform. Spotify's pixel credits site visits within its exposure window, but attendance itself is reconciled in your own data.

Podcast and audio ads suit some webinars well: business shows, personal finance shows, industry podcasts whose listeners match the session's topic. The listener hears the pitch while commuting, then types the address later on another device. There is no click, so nothing carries a Spotify identifier into the registration form.

Give the ad a short vanity URL that redirects to the registration page with a Spotify UTM source, and add a 'how did you hear about us' question to the form. The redirect catches people who type the address; the question catches people who search the webinar name instead. Store both on the registrant record. Attendance by that source is then a number your webinar platform already has.

Spotify's pixel will attribute site visits and registrations within its exposure window, and that figure will not agree with your vanity URL count, because exposure attribution includes people who would have registered anyway. Compare attendance from Spotify-sourced registrants against other channels. To size the channel properly, run the audio in some markets and hold it back in others, and compare registrations.

Architecture

The exact event sequence

Five stages. The gap between stages two and three is days, which is short enough to stay inside every import window and long enough to break cookie-based approaches. The identifier has to survive all of them.

  1. Step 1

    Ad click

Identifier captured on landing and written into the registration.

  2. Step 2

    Registered

The form event. Cheap, plentiful, and a weak predictor on its own.

  3. Step 3

    Attended

Days later, from the platform's webhook. This is the event worth optimizing toward.

  4. Step 4

    Watched past a threshold

Where the platform reports it — a much stronger signal than merely joining.

  5. Step 5

    Attendance sent back

Uploaded against the original click, so bidding learns which channels produce people who show up.

Diagnostic sequence

What's specific to Spotify Ads

The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Spotify Ads.

  1. 1

Why Spotify has no click identifier

This is the part that makes Spotify different from every other platform on this site. An audio ad played while someone is driving, running or washing up has no click surface at all, and the listener is not looking at a screen. There is no equivalent of gclid or fbclid to capture, because for most impressions there was never a click to identify. Spotify's own documentation is explicit that the pixel fires on a site visit within the attribution window whether or not the listener clicked. Anyone selling you click-based Spotify attribution has not read how the platform works.

  2. 2

    Import mechanism: the Spotify Pixel

A JavaScript pixel in the head of every page, plus event snippets for the conversions you care about. Spotify Ad Analytics then attributes site actions back to ad exposure using IP matching and device graphs rather than a click identifier — which is probabilistic by construction. Read Spotify's own current documentation before building; the pixel's capabilities were extended across music and podcast inventory and older guides describe a narrower product.

  3. 3

    Deduplication

The deduplication problem here is not browser-versus-server, it is Spotify-versus-everyone-else. Because attribution is exposure-based and probabilistic, a conversion Spotify claims will frequently also be claimed by Google, Meta and your email tool — all four looking at the same purchase. Summing platform-reported conversions across channels has always been wrong; with an exposure-attributed channel in the mix it is wrong by a much larger margin. Reconcile against your own order count, always.

  4. 4

    Window and timing

Spotify attributes a site visit within 30 days of ad exposure by default. Confirm the window your reporting is actually set to before comparing it with anything, because a 30-day exposure window and a 7-day click window are not comparable measurements of the same thing.

  5. 5

    The Spotify gotcha

The honest position on audio is that a meaningful share of its effect is not attributable at all and never will be. Someone hears your ad in the car, remembers the name, and searches for you two days later on a different device — that conversion belongs to Spotify and will be recorded as organic search. The correct way to size audio is a geo holdout or a promo code, not a pixel. Say that before anyone sets a target, because the pixel will systematically under-report the channel and over-report Google.

Source-of-truth validation

How to prove the chain works

One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.

Source of truthyour webinar platform's attendance records
  • A live Spotify ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
  • The same identifier confirmed on the registrant record in your webinar platform and CRM after a full real journey through every step.
  • Attendance sent back confirmed arriving at Spotify Ads, verified by a geo holdout or promo-code redemption count, reconciled against your own order records — not the conversion figure in Spotify's dashboard.
  • Your webinar platform's attendance records reconciled against Spotify Ads per record over a fully closed window.
  • The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.

Straight talk

When this doesn't apply to you

Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.

  • If your webinars are evergreen and on-demand, there's no scheduled attendance event to send. That's closer to a content-consumption funnel and wants a different treatment.
  • If you are running audio as a small test and expect a pixel to prove it worked, do not build this yet. Run a geo holdout instead: it costs nothing to implement, it measures the thing you actually want to know, and it is the only method that survives scrutiny on an exposure-attributed channel.
  • If your cycle from click to attendance sent back regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward registration with a qualification flag instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
  • If you cannot run a holdout, be honest that Spotify's reported conversions cannot be separated from what other channels also claimed. That is a reason to keep the budget small, not a reason to build a pipeline.

What you get

The implementation, on Spotify Ads

Item 01

Install the pixel and size what it misses

There is no identifier to capture from the URL for most impressions. What you can capture is a promo code or a vanity URL read out in the creative, both of which produce a deterministic signal that the pixel cannot. Use a distinct code per campaign and treat that count as the floor on Spotify's real contribution.

Item 02

Persist it to the registrant record in your webinar platform and CRM

Write it into the registration form as a hidden field, so it's on the registrant record before the webinar happens.

Item 03

Send attendance sent back from the record

The webinar platform's attendance webhook fires after the session, carrying the registrant reference. Dispatched to Spotify Ads through the Spotify Pixel and Ad Analytics.

Item 04

Deduplicate and reverse

There is no click identifier to deduplicate against, so the usual event_id pairing does not apply in the same way. Not usually applicable — attendance either happened or it didn't. Duplicate registrations should be deduplicated on the registrant record.

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01How do I measure webinar registrations from Spotify ads?

Read a short vanity URL in the ad that redirects with a Spotify UTM source, and ask how registrants heard about the session. Store both on the registrant record.

02Can Spotify optimize toward webinar attendance?

No click-based optimization exists for audio. Use attendance from Spotify-sourced registrants to judge shows and creative, not to train bidding.

03Why isn't registered enough to optimize on?

Because attendance rates differ by an order of magnitude between channels. A channel producing cheap registrations that nobody attends looks like the best performer you have.

04How does the identifier survive to attendance sent back?

It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the registrant record in your webinar platform and CRM at the point of ad click, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.

05What does Spotify Ads need to accept the conversion?

The pixel installed sitewide and firing on the events you care about, plus a defensible way to size what the pixel cannot see. Spotify needs no click identifier because it is not matching one; it is matching exposure to visit.

06How long does this take to build?

Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.

07Can I do this myself?

Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that is genuinely hard rather than fiddly is the holdout design — deciding what to hold back, for how long, and how to read the difference without fooling yourself.
