Founders, marketers, and agency owners describing the before-and-after of their Auto Dealers tracking rebuild — in their own words, on camera.

The problem

What breaks on a vendor-hosted dealer site

Auto Dealers-specific issues
Leak #01

Your website vendor owns the head tag

On Dealer.com, Dealer Inspire, DealerOn or Sincro you get a tag slot, not the container. A platform release can drop your tags without telling anyone, and the vendor's own GTM is usually firing a second GA4 and a second pixel next to yours.

Leak #02

Trade-in and credit tools are iframes

Kelley Blue Book Instant Cash Offer, TradePending, the payment calculator and the credit application all live on another domain. The submit fires inside a frame the parent never hears, GA4 opens a new session, and the highest-intent action on the site gets credited to a referral.

Leak #03

"Check availability" and a credit app are one event

A single generate_lead means a price shopper on a ten-year-old trade counts the same as a pre-qualified buyer on a new truck. Bidding buys the cheaper one, because the cheaper one is easier to get.

Leak #04

The deal closes in the DMS, weeks later

CDK, Reynolds or Tekion knows the unit was delivered and what the front and back gross were. Your CRM knows which lead it came from. Neither tells Google Ads, and by the time anyone checks, the click is near the edge of the import window.

Who this is for

Honest about who we’re a fit for.

We don’t take every project. Here’s how to tell if we’re right for you.

Good fit

You’re a great fit if…

  • You run Auto Dealers (or are migrating to it)
  • You spend $5K+/month on paid ads (Meta, Google, TikTok, Microsoft, LinkedIn)
  • Your reported ROAS doesn’t match what your bank account is saying
  • You want to own your tracking stack — no monthly SaaS fees forever
  • You have 2–4 days to do this once and never think about it again
Not a fit

Skip us if…

  • You spend less than $500/month on paid ads (browser pixel is fine)
  • You want a SaaS dashboard with monthly fees forever (Triple Whale, Hyros)
  • You need attribution modeling — we fix the data foundation, not multi-touch reports
  • You want a 6-month enterprise consulting engagement (we ship in 4 days)
  • You expect us to manage your ad accounts (we don’t — that’s a different service)

If you’re still unsure, book the call anyway — we’ll tell you straight whether we can help.

Our position

If your reported ROAS disagrees with your bank account, you don’t have an attribution problem. You have a data foundation problem. No SaaS dashboard fixes that — only a rebuilt 1st-party server-side stack does.

The outcome

What changes when the delivered unit is the conversion

VDP signals that mean something

Server-side

VDP views carry new versus used, body style, price band, days on lot and stock number, so you can bid toward the inventory that's aging instead of the inventory that sells itself.

Iframe tools report into your own container

8+ EMQ

Trade-in, payment and credit-app completions get bridged back with the session intact, so they're credited to the campaign that produced them rather than to kbb.com.

Gross, not lead count, drives the bidding

Deduped

Delivered units go back with front and back gross as the value, matched on hashed contact from the CRM. A store selling fewer, better deals stops looking worse than one farming lead volume.

A matchback the GM already understands

Backend-verified

Monthly: clicks, leads, delivered units and gross side by side against the DMS. It's the Source-of-Truth Reconciliation Method applied to a sales log the store already trusts.

A typical engagement

The shape of a typical Auto Dealers rebuild

We’re not going to invent a fake testimonial here. Instead — here’s the realistic pattern of what happens, anonymized but accurate to engagements we ship.

Day 0 — They arrive

A 7-figure Auto Dealers store spending ~$25K/month on Meta. Reported ROAS shows 4.1× in Ads Manager. Their bookkeeper’s number says 2.6×. The founder doesn’t know which is real, so they keep doubling down on what looks like a winning campaign — except cash flow tells a different story.

Day 1 — Audit

We screen-share. Within 20 minutes we’ve found the leaks: native pixel firing twice on iOS, CAPI dedup using the wrong event_id (Meta is double-counting), GA4 showing 38% (not set), and the Customer Events API never enabled. The 1.5× ROAS gap explains itself.

Day 2–3 — Build

Server-side GTM container goes live on data.theirstore.com. Meta CAPI rebuilt with full advanced matching. Google Enhanced Conversions wired. TikTok Events API turned on. All event_ids deterministic. iOS recovered.

Day 4 — Launch

Live-fire test purchases through every funnel step. Meta Event Match Quality goes from 4.5 to 8.7 — verified live in Events Manager. They get a Notion runbook + Loom walkthrough so their dev team can extend it.

Day 5–7 — Accuracy

Conversion data starts flowing cleanly. Day 7: reported ROAS reads 2.8× (matches Stripe within 5%). Lookalike audiences grow because Meta finally has clean seed data. Their CAC dashboard makes sense for the first time in a year.

Day 30 — The math compounds

Smart Bidding has 30 days of clean signal. CPA drops 18%. They scale Meta budget 40% because they finally trust the data. Net new revenue from the recovered tracking: roughly $14K/mo above what they were getting before.

Numbers above are realistic averages from engagements we’ve shipped. Your specific recovery depends on your iOS share, ad-blocker rate, and current setup — we’ll quantify it on the call.

The cookie window unlock

400-day cookie lifetime — the longest your browser allows

Default Auto Dealers setups put cookies on a 7–30 day timer. Safari ITP caps client-set cookies at 7 days. That kills your retargeting windows, shrinks lookalike audiences, and starves Smart Bidding of historical signal.

We set 1st-party cookies via HTTP headers on your own subdomain — exempt from ITP’s 7-day cap. Lifetime: 400 days. The maximum Chrome, Firefox and Safari currently permit.

  • 57× longer retargeting window vs Safari default

Reach users who saw your ad 6 months ago instead of last week.

  • Bigger lookalike seed pools

More retained users in your custom audience = better lookalike quality on Meta, Google, TikTok.

  • Smart Bidding has 13× more signal history

Algorithms optimize on 400 days of behavior, not 7 days. CPA stabilizes faster.

  • Critical for high-AOV / long-consideration purchases

If your average buyer takes 30+ days to convert, default cookies miss them. 400-day cookies don’t.

Cookie lifetime — head to head

400 days is the hard maximum enforced by RFC 6265bis (Chrome 104+, Safari 17+, Firefox 110+). We set it via HTTP Set-Cookie: Max-Age=34560000 on your subdomain. Survives Safari ITP’s 7-day client-side cap.

POAS — Profit on Ad Spend

Send actual profit data (not revenue) to Meta / Google. Smart Bidding optimizes for the metric that matters: net margin, not gross revenue.

Identity

Cross-session User ID

Stable userID generated server-side from IP + UA + SSL fingerprint. Stitches anonymous → known → returning visitors across 400 days.

Audience signal

GEO Headers

GeoIP enrichment

Country, region, city, postal code passed to Meta / Google CAPI from your server — without exposing the raw user IP to the browser.

Compliance

Anonymizer

PII hashing by default

Email, phone, name, address are SHA-256 hashed on your server before they leave for Meta or Google. Zero raw PII in transit.

Quality filtering

Bot Detection

Bot traffic detection

Bot/scraper traffic identified at the gateway and blocked from polluting your audiences. Smart Bidding optimizes against humans, not bots.

Reliability

Dedup logic

Browser ↔ server dedup

Deterministic event_id and event_time so Meta / Google never double-count. Your reported ROAS stops contradicting Stripe.

Reputation

Dedicated IP

Dedicated outbound IP

Your sGTM gets a dedicated static IP for outgoing CAPI requests. Better deliverability to Meta, Google, TikTok — no shared-IP noise.

Residency

Multi-region

EU / US region routing

GDPR-conscious stores route their CAPI traffic through EU regions (Stape EU or self-hosted GCR europe-west). No US data hop.

Data warehouse

BigQuery export

BigQuery + Looker dashboard

Server logs + GA4 raw events streamed to BigQuery. Looker Studio dashboard branded for your team. Premium tier.

We’re official Stape Pro partners — every Power-Up above is enabled and configured for you. Or we self-host the equivalent on your Cloud Run / GKE if your traffic justifies the cost crossover. You pick.

Live data flow

What your stack is doing — right now

Every conversion fires through your subdomain, gets enriched with hashed identity params, deduped against the browser pixel, then forwarded to Meta CAPI, Google EC, TikTok Events API and Microsoft UET in parallel.

You see this stream live in your sGTM debug console — not a SaaS dashboard you rent. It’s your data, on your server, on your subdomain.

What you get

What we build for a store whose website isn't its own

Item 01

A first-party container the vendor can't overwrite

A GTM server container on a subdomain of the dealer's own domain, in the dealer's cloud project. A vendor template push stops being an outage.

Item 02

A vendor tag-slot audit

Everything the site vendor is already firing, listed out: duplicate GA4 properties, stray pixels from the last agency, OEM-mandated tags, and which of them are double counting the same lead.

Item 03

A VDP and SRP dataLayer spec

Vehicle attributes on every VDP view and SRP filter, plus phone, chat and form events from Gubagoo, ActivEngage or Podium. Written as a spec your vendor can implement, or we deploy it through the tag slot.

Item 04

An iframe bridge for the high-intent tools

postMessage or vendor callback handling for trade-in, payment calculator and credit application, with cross-domain linking so the session survives the hop.

Item 05

A CRM and DMS matchback pipeline

VinSolutions, Elead, DealerSocket or DriveCentric leads joined to delivered units from CDK, Reynolds or Tekion, then returned to Google and Meta with hashed contact and gross as the value.

Item 06

A rollout that repeats across rooftops

One build, deployed store by store with its own container and reporting, and co-op documentation showing the OEM what fired without disturbing their required tags.

The honest math

Three ways to fix your tracking. One of them makes sense.

Option 1

Hire a senior tracking engineer

$15K–$25Kin dev cost

or 2–4 weeks of senior FTE time

  • 2–4 weeks before anything ships
  • Misses iOS / Safari / dedup edge cases
  • No EMQ guarantee — it’s “done” when they say so
  • Pixel debugging is not their day job

Option 2

Triple Whale / Hyros / Northbeam

$300–$2,000/month forever

$18K–$120K over 5 years

  • You rent a dashboard — they own your data
  • Cancel and you lose attribution overnight
  • Per-event / per-visitor pricing surprises
  • Still doesn’t fix your underlying tracking
Recommended

Option 3 — us

Done-for-you 1st-party server-side

$400–$1,800one-time

pay once · own the stack forever

  • Live in 2–4 days · accurate data within 7
  • iOS / Safari / dedup all handled by default
  • Meta EMQ 8+ guaranteed in writing
  • You own everything — server, container, runbook

We’re upfront: if you have a senior in-house dev with capacity and 4 weeks, hiring is fine. If you spend $1M+/yr on ads and want a SaaS dashboard layered on top, Triple Whale works. For most paid-ad advertisers between, we’re the math that makes sense.

“I’ll personally walk through your tracking on the call. No SDR. No sales pitch.”

I’ve spent 8 years rebuilding tracking for DTC brands, SaaS founders, agencies, and one thing I’ve learned: most tracking problems aren’t technical — they’re trust problems. You don’t know who to believe. Your current vendor swears it’s fine. Meta’s reports look great. Stripe says otherwise.

On our call, I’ll personally show you exactly what’s leaking, exactly what it would cost to recover, and whether you should hire us at all. If your current setup is genuinely fine, I’ll tell you. If a $400 browser-side fix is enough, I’ll say so. No upsell pressure.

Book the call. Worst case, you walk away with a free 47-point audit checklist. Best case, we deliver your 1st-party server-side stack in 2–4 days and your data is fully accurate within 7 days.

Architecture

SRP to VDP to lead to delivered unit

The dealer funnel spans a vendor-controlled website, third-party iframes, a sales CRM and a DMS. We instrument each hop and rejoin them on a click ID or a hashed contact.

  1. Step 1

The vendor tag slot, used carefully

Dealer.com, Dealer Inspire, DealerOn or Sincro keeps its own container; we deploy through the slot they give you and route everything to a container the store owns.

  2. Step 2

VDP and SRP events carry vehicle attributes

Every vehicle detail page view sends condition, body style, price band, days on lot and stock number, so bidding can chase the inventory that's aging.

  3. Step 3

Iframe tools bridged back to the parent

KBB Instant Cash Offer, TradePending, payment calculators and credit applications report completions over postMessage or a vendor callback with the session intact.

  4. Step 4

CRM owns the lead, the DMS owns the sale

VinSolutions, Elead, DealerSocket or DriveCentric holds the stored click ID, while CDK, Reynolds or Tekion holds the delivered unit and the gross.

  5. Step 5

Matchback returns gross to the platforms

Delivered units go back as offline conversions matched on hashed contact, with front plus back gross as the value rather than a lead count.

Source-of-truth validation

The monthly matchback against the DMS sold report

The store already trusts its own sold log, so that's what we reconcile to, rooftop by rooftop rather than group-wide.

Source of truthDelivered units and front/back gross in CDK, Reynolds & Reynolds or Tekion, taken from the DMS sold report
  • Export delivered units for the month with deal number, VIN, gross, and the CRM lead ID that produced each one.
  • Join to CRM leads and label each deal site-originated, marketplace ADF, phone, walk-in or unknown before any credit is claimed.
  • Match site-originated deals to a click ID; where the click aged out, match on hashed email or phone instead.
  • Compare unit count and total gross to what Google Ads and Meta report by conversion date, per rooftop.
  • Confirm marketplace and OEM-referred leads stayed excluded, so paid search isn't quietly claiming Autotrader or Cars.com volume.
  • Name the remaining gap as window, cross-device or view-through difference, then fix only the events that never fired.

Straight talk

When a rooftop shouldn't buy this yet

Four cases where a dealer's money goes further somewhere else.

  • Most of your volume is marketplace listings and walk-ins and paid search is a small line item. Fix the VDP form and get a tracking number.
  • Your website vendor won't implement a dataLayer change and won't give you the tag slot. Solve the vendor relationship before buying a build.
  • The store doesn't reliably close CRM leads to a deal record. Without that link there's no matchback to build, only one to invent.
  • You run only OEM-controlled tier-3 campaigns where the manufacturer owns the creative, the budget and the landing pages.

Got questions?

The honest answers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Our website vendor won't give us access. Now what?

We've never needed full access. The vendor keeps their container, we use the tag slot they do give you, and everything else runs in a server container on your domain. Where the vendor has to implement a dataLayer change, we hand them a written spec instead of a support ticket, which tends to move faster.

02Do you fix Autotrader, Cars.com and CarGurus leads?

No, and be careful with anyone who says they do. Those leads arrive as ADF into your CRM without ever touching your site, so there's no click to match them to. What we can do is keep them clearly separated from your own site's leads, so your paid search numbers aren't quietly taking credit for marketplace volume.

03Will this survive OEM co-op review?

It's built with that in mind. We document what fires, leave the OEM's required tags alone, and keep reporting in a form co-op administrators accept. We can't promise a particular claim gets approved, since that's between you and the manufacturer, but we won't be the reason it gets kicked back.

04Sales take weeks. Does the click still match?

Usually, because most delivered units close inside Google's 90-day click import window. For the ones that don't, we send the lead-stage event while the click is still in window and attribute the sale through hashed contact matching, which doesn't depend on a click ID at all.

05We're a group with a dozen rooftops on one template.

That's the easy case. The build gets done once against the shared template, then deployed per store with its own container, its own CRM connection and its own reporting. One rooftop's mess stays in that rooftop instead of polluting group numbers.

06What about the service drive?

Xtime and myKaarma scheduling can be tracked the same way, and service is usually the faster win because appointments close in days rather than weeks. We keep it in its own conversion action so service volume doesn't get mixed into sales bidding and flatten the value signal.

07When do we not need this?

If most of your volume comes from marketplace listings and walk-ins, and paid search is a small line item, this is premature. Fix the VDP form and get a tracking number first. It starts paying when you're spending enough on your own site's traffic that the difference between lead count and gross would change a decision.
