Authorize.net → Attentive · Conversion tracking
Connecting Authorize.net to Attentive
Authorize.net is one of the oldest payment gateways still in wide use, which means it sits underneath a great many legacy carts that were built before anyone thought about attribution. Attentive is SMS, where the identifier is a phone number, the consent rules are legal rather than advisory, and a mistake reaches the customer's pocket within seconds. The join between them succeeds or fails on one thing: whether the subscriber's phone number reaches the Authorize.net transaction before the conversion happens, because Attentive can only match a conversion it can tie back to a click it recognizes.

Founders, marketers, and agency owners describing the before-and-after of their Authorize.net → Attentive tracking rebuild — in their own words, on camera.
Why this join usually fails
The subscriber's phone number never reaches Authorize.net
The single most common cause. The gateway sees a payment and nothing about marketing. Whether an identifier exists depends entirely on whether the cart passed it into a custom field when creating the transaction, and legacy carts generally did not.
A legacy gateway under a legacy cart
Authorize.net is usually the oldest thing in the stack. The custom fields exist and almost nobody populates them, so the transaction arrives with no trace of the campaign that produced it.
Consent state treated as a tracking detail rather than a legal one
Sending an event is not the same as being allowed to message the person it describes. US SMS marketing is governed by express written consent requirements with statutory damages per message, and "the integration sent it" is not a defence. Consent state has to be checked at send time, in Attentive, not inferred from the fact that an event arrived.
Nothing reconciles afterwards
An upload that succeeds is not an upload that matched. Attentive shows the event on the subscriber record and the journey it triggered. Check the subscriber's consent status alongside, because that is the field that decides whether anything should have happened.
Architecture
How Authorize.net and Attentive actually connect
Two systems that know nothing about each other. Everything below exists to give them one shared reference.
Step 1
Authorize.net holds the truth
Authorisation reserves funds and settlement moves them. Authorize.net batches settlement, usually daily, so a transaction authorised late in the day settles the next — which shifts revenue across a date boundary if you report the wrong state.
Step 2
Attentive needs a click to match
Attentive needs the subscriber's phone number, the event name and its properties. It also needs the subscriber to have consented — an event about someone who never opted in cannot legally be messaged, whatever the event says.
Step 3
The identifier is the bridge
The subscriber's phone number, captured at the visit and carried into the Authorize.net transaction. Without it there is nothing to join on and no tool fixes that.
Step 4
The event source decides reliability
Fire on settled, not authorised. Batching means the two carry different dates, and reporting on authorisation puts revenue in the wrong day.
Step 5
Deduplication at the destination
Attentive does not deduplicate for you. A purchase sent twice can trigger a journey twice, and the customer receives two texts. Unlike an email, a duplicate SMS costs you money per send and irritates the recipient measurably more.
Diagnose it honestly
Working vs. broken, side by side
Both states look identical from the Attentive dashboard, which is why this runs for months before anyone notices.
Normal — not a fault
The subscriber's phone number present on the transaction
Visible on the record itself in Authorize.net, not merely captured somewhere on the site.
Sent from the Authorize.net webhook on settlement
Server-side, so it does not depend on the customer's browser still being there.
Deduplicated correctly
Attentive does not deduplicate for you. A purchase sent twice can trigger a journey twice, and the customer receives two texts. Unlike an email, a duplicate SMS costs you money per send and irritates the recipient measurably more.
Reconciles with the source
Attentive's count and Authorize.net's records agree within a few percent over a closed window.
Actually broken
The subscriber's phone number missing on most records
The gateway sees a payment and nothing about marketing. Whether an identifier exists depends entirely on whether the cart passed it into a custom field when creating the transaction, and legacy carts generally did not.
Sent from the browser
Anyone who closes the tab, blocks the script or converts without a page load is invisible. Authorize.net is usually the oldest thing in the stack. The custom fields exist and almost nobody populates them, so the transaction arrives with no trace of the campaign that produced it.
Counted twice, or not at all
Sending an event is not the same as being allowed to message the person it describes. US SMS marketing is governed by express written consent requirements with statutory damages per message, and "the integration sent it" is not a defence. Consent state has to be checked at send time, in Attentive, not inferred from the fact that an event arrived.
Nobody has reconciled it
The dashboard shows a number and no one has compared it to Authorize.net. A wrong number that nobody checks is indistinguishable from a right one.
Diagnostic sequence
Diagnostic order
Each step rules out a class of cause. Run them in order and the last one usually has a single explanation standing.
- 1
Count transactions carrying the subscriber's phone number
The ceiling on everything else. Do this before debugging anything downstream.
- 2
Follow one real conversion end to end
From the ad click through Authorize.net and into Attentive.
- 3
Open a settled transaction and read its user-defined fields
Empty means the cart never passed anything, which is the usual finding and cannot be recovered retroactively.
- 4
Verify that events for non-consented customers cannot trigger a send
Check the journey's entry conditions, not the event pipeline. The pipeline will happily deliver an event about someone who never opted in; the journey is what must refuse to act on it.
- 5
Read the match rate, not the success message
Attentive shows the event on the subscriber record and the journey it triggered. Check the subscriber's consent status alongside, because that is the field that decides whether anything should have happened.
Source-of-truth validation
How it gets proven
Against Authorize.net's own records, not against either platform's dashboard.
- The subscriber's phone number confirmed present on a live transaction.
- A real conversion followed from click through Authorize.net to Attentive.
- Events confirmed on subscriber records with consent state verified, and a test proving a non-consented profile does not trigger a send.
- A transaction confirmed to carry the identifier through authorisation into settlement.
- Reconciled over a fully closed window, matched per record rather than on totals.
- Re-checked 30 days later.
Straight talk
When you don't need this
Worth reading before paying anyone, including us.
- If Attentive already reports conversions that reconcile against Authorize.net's records within a few percent, this join is working and there is nothing to buy.
- Measure identifier coverage yourself first — pull your last hundred transactions and count how many carry the subscriber's phone number. Ten minutes, free, and it tells you whether any of this is worth doing.
- If the cart on top of Authorize.net already reports orders accurately, work at the order layer — it is closer to the customer and easier to change.
- If you do not have a consented SMS list, the integration is the least of the work. Building the list compliantly comes first, and no event pipeline substitutes for it.
Who this is for
Honest about who we’re a fit for.
We don’t take every project. Here’s how to tell if we’re right for you.
You’re a great fit if…
- You run Authorize.net → Attentive (or are migrating to it)
- You spend $5K+/month on paid ads (Meta, Google, TikTok, Microsoft, LinkedIn)
- Your reported ROAS doesn’t match what your bank account is saying
- You want to own your tracking stack — no monthly SaaS fees forever
- You have 2–4 days to do this once and never think about it again
Skip us if…
- You spend less than $500/month on paid ads (browser pixel is fine)
- You want a SaaS dashboard with monthly fees forever (Triple Whale, Hyros)
- You need attribution modeling — we fix the data foundation, not multi-touch reports
- You want a 6-month enterprise consulting engagement (we ship in 4 days)
- You expect us to manage your ad accounts (we don’t — that’s a different service)
If you’re still unsure, book the call anyway— we’ll tell you straight whether we can help.
What working looks like
The subscriber's phone number on every transaction
Server-sideCaptured before the conversion and stored where it survives.
Conversions arriving in Attentive
8+ EMQThe event lands on the subscriber, triggers the journeys that depend on it, and becomes available for segmentation.
Reconciled against the source
DedupedAuthorize.net's own records are the reference, not either dashboard.
What gets built
Identifier capture into Authorize.net
Pass the click identifier into the transaction's user-defined fields when your application creates the charge. Authorize.net preserves them through settlement and into the transaction detail record.
Event source: the Authorize.net webhook on settlement
Fire on settled, not authorised. Batching means the two carry different dates, and reporting on authorisation puts revenue in the wrong day.
Dispatch to Attentive
The Attentive events API, posted server-side from your order system with the subscriber's phone number and the event properties.
Reversals where they exist
Voids, refunds and chargebacks are all recorded against the original transaction and carry its user-defined fields.
Pick the package that fits your ad spend
Fixed-fee, no surprises. If your ad spend is meaningful,server-side tracking is what we recommend— it’s the only setup that survives iOS, Safari ITP and ad blockers.
Browser-side starter
Wires the join and verifies it on a live conversion. Honest about its ceiling where the source can only be read from the browser.
- The join built and tested end to end
- Verified on a real conversion
- Reconciled against the source's own records
- Written handover
1st-party server-side
Save $18K–$120K over 5 years vs Triple Whale / Hyros

- Events sourced from the system of record, not the browser
- Identifier captured and persisted end to end
- Deduplicated at the destination
- Reversals wired where the source supports them
- 95%+ accuracy guaranteed in writing

Got questions?
The honestanswers.
No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.
01Why aren't my Authorize.net conversions showing in Attentive?
Almost always because the subscriber's phone number never reached the Authorize.net transaction. The gateway sees a payment and nothing about marketing. Whether an identifier exists depends entirely on whether the cart passed it into a custom field when creating the transaction, and legacy carts generally did not. Measure coverage before debugging the dispatch.
02What identifier does Attentive need?
Attentive resolves to a subscriber by phone number. There is no click identifier and no cookie in the messaging channel at all. The phone number is also regulated personal data under US telemarketing rules, which means the identifier itself carries obligations that a gclid does not.
03Where should the event come from?
The Authorize.net webhook on settlement. Fire on settled, not authorised. Batching means the two carry different dates, and reporting on authorisation puts revenue in the wrong day.
04How do I know it worked?
Attentive shows the event on the subscriber record and the journey it triggered. Check the subscriber's consent status alongside, because that is the field that decides whether anything should have happened.
