PayPalPayments and financing

PayPal took the payment. Your ads never heard about it.

The money is in your PayPal activity, yet Google Ads and Meta show a fraction of those sales and GA4 credits the rest to paypal.com. Buyers pay in a PayPal popup, on PayPal's page after a mobile redirect, in the Venmo app or through a pay link you texted, and your thank-you tag only fires if they land back on your site. We report each completed PayPal payment to the ad platforms, tied to the ad click that sent the buyer whenever there was one.

PayPal · what breaks

What goes wrong when customers pay with PayPal

  1. 01

"PayPal shows the sales. Google Ads shows a handful."

On phones the payment finishes away from your site: on PayPal's redirect page, in the Venmo app, or on a pay link checkout that only sends buyers back if Auto Return is on. Anyone who doesn't land back on your page in the same browser never fires your purchase tag, so campaigns that sell look like losers and get cut.

  2. 02

GA4 says paypal.com is your top source

A buyer coming back from PayPal shows up as a referral from paypal.com unless that domain is excluded, so the driving lesson package your Google Ads click earned gets credited to a payment processor.

  3. 03

Pay link sales have no ad trail at all

A pay link or QR code from a text, Instagram bio or flyer opens PayPal's own checkout, where your Pixel and Google tag don't run and the link carries no click ID. The escape room booking gets paid and no campaign gets credit.

  4. 04

Refunds and chargebacks still count as wins

When a fishing charter is rained out or a buyer disputes a charge, PayPal records the refund, but the conversion stays in Google Ads and Meta. Your return on ad spend looks better than your bank balance.

PayPal · the fix

What changes once PayPal reports to your ad accounts

  • Every completed PayPal payment reaches the ad platforms

Popup, mobile redirect, Venmo or pay link, the sale is sent from PayPal's record of the completed capture, not from a page the buyer has to reach.

  • The campaign that earned the sale gets the credit

The click ID travels inside the PayPal order, so Google Ads and Meta match the payment to the ad.

  • Revenue that matches your PayPal activity

Pay Later orders count once at full value, deposits stay tied to their booking, and refunds and reversals come off at every destination.

PayPal · architecture

What PayPal actually lets you hook into

We found no PayPal-documented Google Ads, GA4, Tag Manager or Meta Pixel connection for Checkout or pay links. These are the hooks PayPal does document.

  1. 1

    JavaScript SDK callbacks

onApprove, onCancel and onError fire in your page. Auto mode tries a popup, then an on-page modal; redirect mode, recommended for mobile, sends buyers to PayPal and back.

  2. 2

    The order's custom ID

Orders accept a custom_id of up to 255 characters, hidden from the payer and shown in PayPal's transaction reports. The click IDs go here.

  3. 3

    Webhooks

PAYMENT.CAPTURE.COMPLETED, REFUNDED, REVERSED and PENDING, plus INVOICING.INVOICE.PAID. PayPal retries a failed delivery up to 25 times over 3 days.

  4. 4

    Pay links and buttons

No-code links, buttons and QR codes that open PayPal's checkout. Auto Return is a setting you turn on, and Payment Data Transfer only sends details back when it is.

  5. 5

    Transaction Search and Zapier

The reporting API can take up to three hours to list a transaction, so it's for reconciliation, not live reporting. Zapier's Payment Capture and Payment Refund triggers suit small volumes.

PayPal · diagnose

Where PayPal tracking breaks, in diagnostic order

Start on a phone, where PayPal hands the buyer off.

  1. 01

    What fires the purchase today?

A thank-you URL, the onApprove callback, or nothing?

  2. 02

Pay on a phone three ways

Through the redirect, through Venmo and through a pay link. Any path that doesn't land on a page firing the purchase tag loses every sale that takes it.

  3. 03

Is the click ID on the PayPal order?

Pay through a link carrying a test gclid and open the transaction's custom field.

  4. 04

Is paypal.com an unwanted referral in GA4?

Check referral exclusions and how much revenue sits under paypal.com.

  5. 05

How are pay links, Pay Later and refunds reported?

Compare each against what the ad platforms show.

PayPal · prove

The QA evidence — PayPal

Run with live payments on your PayPal business account, since Venmo isn't in PayPal's sandbox.

Source of truth

PayPal account activity and transaction records: completed captures by date, amount, payer and custom ID, with refunds, reversals and disputes

  • A payment started from a link with a test gclid and fbclid, both found in the transaction's custom field.
  • A Venmo payment on a phone, reported once from the capture webhook.
  • One Meta purchase per payment, browser and server sharing an event ID.
  • A Pay in 4 order reported once, at the full amount.
  • A pay link payment matched back to its lead by payer email.
  • A refund reversing the value at every destination.
  • Every capture in a closed month ticked off against a reported conversion, and the check repeated 30 days later.

PayPal · when not to buy

When you don't need this on PayPal

Plenty of PayPal setups don't justify the build yet.

  • If PayPal is a sliver of your revenue, fix the system that takes most of your money first.
  • If PayPal sits inside Shopify or a booking tool's checkout, that platform's order is the source of truth and the fix belongs there.
  • If pay links only go to repeat customers by text, there's no ad click to credit.
  • If the only fault is paypal.com as a GA4 source, adding it to unwanted referrals is a five-minute job you can do yourself.

PayPal · what we deliver

The event map on PayPal

  • Checkout started with click ID stored

At the PayPal, Pay Later or Venmo button, the GCLID and Meta click ID go into the order's custom ID.

  • Order approved

A diagnostic signal from onApprove. Approval isn't money, so it's never the conversion.

  • Payment captured

The conversion, sent on PAYMENT.CAPTURE.COMPLETED at the captured amount, full value for Pay in 4 and Pay Monthly.

  • Pay link payment

Same capture events, matched to the lead by payer email when no click ID rides along.

  • Deposit and balance

A breeder's puppy deposit and its balance stay one customer, never two acquisitions.

  • Refunds, reversals and pending captures

Refunds and reversals subtracted everywhere; pending captures wait, declined ones are dropped.

FAQ

PayPal questions, answered

No. PayPal runs that page and documents no place for your tags, so the sale is reported from PayPal's capture record through your own server container.
