Advertising and sales tracking for local shops

A local shop's ads mostly end somewhere the ad platforms cannot see. Someone searches, finds the store on Google Maps, drives over and pays at the counter. Someone reserves online and pays at pickup. Someone calls to check stock. Someone orders through DoorDash or Instacart because that is where they already shop. The point-of-sale system records the sale with no click ID attached, so Google Ads and Meta see a fraction of the revenue and the owner concludes the ads are not working.

The website side has its own leaks. Checkout often happens on a vendor's domain: a Square checkout link, a Clover online ordering page, a Dutchie or Jane menu inside an iframe, or a florist or liquor network's hosted store. The click ID and the session die at the hop, and the purchase gets credited as a referral. Shops on Shopify, Wix or WooCommerce have the opposite problem: a theme pixel plus an app pixel plus a server-side tag, with no shared event ID, so one order counts twice.

Local Services Ads are not a retail channel; none of the retail categories in our research are on Google's LSA list. The paid tools that matter are Search, Performance Max, Meta, and Google Merchant Center's local inventory features, free local listings and local inventory ads, which show in-stock products near the shopper and push them to the store or to pickup. The Business Profile matters more here than in most verticals, because direction requests and calls are often the first sign of a store visit.

Some products cannot be advertised on Google at all. Google does not allow ads for guns and functional gun parts, or for products marketed as facilitating recreational drug use, which keeps most cannabis and many vape shops off Google Ads and pushes them toward organic search, the Business Profile and marketplaces such as Leafly and Weedmaps. Financing offers such as rent-to-own fall under Meta's financial products and services special ad category. Optical stores selling prescription eyewear touch Google's health rules.

The record that counts is the sale in the POS or the store platform: Square, Clover, Shopify POS, Lightspeed Retail or Toast Retail, Dutchie or Treez for dispensaries, and the delivered order in Zapiet, Uber Direct or DoorDash Drive for local delivery. Sending those sales back usually means matching them by hashed email or phone through an offline import or server-side tagging. Each niche below has the tracking guide and, where they exist, the Google Ads playbook.
