Advertising and lead tracking for auto service businesses

The owner of an auto shop counts cars in bays and approved repair orders. Google Ads counts phone rings, taps on the number and clicks for directions. Those are not the same thing, and the gap between them is where most auto ad budgets go missing. A call asking whether a car is ready counts as a new lead. So does a parts supplier, a job applicant and a customer who found the shop on the map after seeing the ad. A flat repair and a full set of tires look identical in the ad account.

Most auto leads are calls, and many are urgent. Towing and glass are close to emergencies: the business that answers first gets the job. Repair and tire shops get a mix of calls and online bookings, and every major shop system now puts a Book button on the Business Profile, so a growing share of bookings never loads the shop's website at all. Detailing, ceramic coating, tint and PPF lean the other way, toward forms, Instagram messages and deposits. Dealers have two funnels on one site, sales and service, and lumping them together hides both.

Local Services Ads now list almost every auto niche: auto repair, brakes, oil change, tires, transmission, auto body, glass, detailing, tint, car wash, inspection, battery and towing. Auto is one of the three groups, with beauty and dining, where Google says the Google Verified badge is currently unavailable, so an auto shop on LSA runs without a badge even though trades in other verticals show one. Trust has to come from reviews, response time and the ad itself. LSA is also moving into Google Ads as Performance Max with pay-per-lead goals; Google's first-phase directory lists the auto repair and storefront categories, while towing was not on it. Old LSA reports do not carry over, so export them before the switch.

The record that matters is the repair order in Tekmetric, Shopmonkey, AutoLeap or Mitchell 1, the paid tow in Towbook, the installed job in Omega EDI, the deposit in Urable, or the deal in VinSolutions, CDK or DealerSocket. Repair revenue is set at the RO, often after inspection and approval, days after the call. Shop systems report attributed revenue in their own dashboards, but sending ROs back to Google Ads and Meta usually needs a server-side match on phone number, booking ID or the click ID captured on the first visit.

Two rule sets catch dealers in particular. Ads that mention financing fall under Meta's financial products and services special ad category, which removes most targeting, and Google's US rules for consumer finance ads block targeting by age, gender or ZIP code. Service-department ads usually avoid both. If you record calls, check your state's consent rules before turning recording on. Each niche below has the tracking guide and, where they exist, the Google Ads playbook and the Local Services Ads guide.

Find your niche. If your ad account counts more calls than your shop system has new repair orders, start with the tracking guide; if you run LSA and Search together, read the LSA guide first.
