Founders, marketers, and agency owners describing the before-and-after of their Google Ads not tracking tracking rebuild — in their own words, on camera.

The problem

Which one of these is your account actually doing?

Google Ads not tracking-specific issues
Leak #01

Status stuck on "Inactive" or "Unverified"

Google Ads hasn't received a valid hit for that conversion label in weeks. Nine times out of ten the tag is on the page and firing — it's carrying a conversion ID and label pair that belongs to a different action, or to an old account nobody deleted.

Leak #02

Auto-tagging is off, so there's no gclid to match

Without auto-tagging there's no gclid on the landing URL and nothing for the conversion linker to write into the _gcl_aw cookie. The tag fires into empty space: Google receives a conversion with no click to attach it to, and drops it.

Leak #03

Checkout sits on a domain the linker never touched

Hosted checkouts and separate payment subdomains start a fresh cookie jar unless cross-domain linking is configured on both ends. The purchase fires on a page that has no memory of the ad click that paid for it.

Leak #04

The action is Secondary, so it never hits Conversions

Sometimes nothing is broken at all. The action is marked Secondary, or "Include in Conversions" is switched off, so the column you keep refreshing will read zero forever while Google logs the data one tab over.

Who this is for

Honest about who we’re a fit for.

We don’t take every project. Here’s how to tell if we’re right for you.

Good fit

You’re a great fit if…

  • You run Google Ads not tracking (or are migrating to it)
  • You spend $5K+/month on paid ads (Meta, Google, TikTok, Microsoft, LinkedIn)
  • Your reported ROAS doesn’t match what your bank account is saying
  • You want to own your tracking stack — no monthly SaaS fees forever
  • You have 2–4 days to do this once and never think about it again
Not a fit

Skip us if…

  • You spend less than $500/month on paid ads (browser pixel is fine)
  • You want a SaaS dashboard with monthly fees forever (Triple Whale, Hyros)
  • You need attribution modeling — we fix the data foundation, not multi-touch reports
  • You want a 6-month enterprise consulting engagement (we ship in 4 days)
  • You expect us to manage your ad accounts (we don’t — that’s a different service)

If you’re still unsure, book the call anyway — we’ll tell you straight whether we can help.

Our position

If your reported ROAS disagrees with your bank account, you don’t have an attribution problem. You have a data foundation problem. No SaaS dashboard fixes that — only a rebuilt 1st-party server-side stack does.

The outcome

What changes once the conversion action is rebuilt

The action reads "Recording conversions" and stays there

Server-side

One conversion ID, one label, one tag that owns it. No orphaned gtag snippet from a previous agency quietly competing with your container.

The gclid survives the checkout redirect

8+ EMQ

Click identity is captured on landing, stored first-party, and passed to the backend with the order — so a payment redirect no longer erases the reason the sale happened.

Enhanced Conversions gives the tag a second identity

Deduped

Hashed email and phone go up alongside the gclid from the server container. When the cookie is gone, Google still has a way to match the conversion to the click.

Smart Bidding trains on conversions that happened

Backend-verified

Bidding models learn from what you report. When the reported set finally matches your order table, the algorithm is optimizing against reality instead of a partial sample.

A typical engagement

The shape of a typical Google Ads not tracking rebuild

We’re not going to invent a fake testimonial here. Instead — here’s the realistic pattern of what happens, anonymized but accurate to engagements we ship.

Day 0 — They arrive

A 7-figure Google Ads not tracking store spending ~$25K/month on Meta. Reported ROAS shows 4.1× in Ads Manager. Their bookkeeper’s number says 2.6×. The founder doesn’t know which is real, so they keep doubling down on what looks like a winning campaign — except cash flow tells a different story.

Day 1 — Audit

We screen-share. Within 20 minutes we’ve found the leaks: native pixel firing twice on iOS, CAPI dedup using the wrong event_id (Meta is double-counting), GA4 showing 38% (not set), and the Customer Events API never enabled. The 1.5× ROAS gap explains itself.

Day 2–3 — Build

Server-side GTM container goes live on data.theirstore.com. Meta CAPI rebuilt with full advanced matching. Google Enhanced Conversions wired. TikTok Events API turned on. All event_ids deterministic. iOS recovered.

Day 4 — Launch

Live-fire test purchases through every funnel step. Meta Event Match Quality goes from 4.5 to 8.7 — verified live in Events Manager. They get a Notion runbook + Loom walkthrough so their dev team can extend it.

Day 5–7 — Accuracy

Conversion data starts flowing cleanly. Day 7: reported ROAS reads 2.8× (matches Stripe within 5%). Lookalike audiences grow because Meta finally has clean seed data. Their CAC dashboard makes sense for the first time in a year.

Day 30 — The math compounds

Smart Bidding has 30 days of clean signal. CPA drops 18%. They scale Meta budget 40% because they finally trust the data. Net new revenue from the recovered tracking: roughly $14K/mo above what they were getting before.

Numbers above are realistic averages from engagements we’ve shipped. Your specific recovery depends on your iOS share, ad-blocker rate, and current setup — we’ll quantify it on the call.

The cookie window unlock

400-day cookie lifetime — the longest your browser allows

Default Google Ads not tracking setups put cookies on a 7–30 day timer. Safari ITP caps client-set cookies at 7 days. That kills your retargeting windows, shrinks lookalike audiences, and starves Smart Bidding of historical signal.

We set 1st-party cookies via HTTP headers on your own subdomain — exempt from ITP’s 7-day cap. Lifetime: 400 days. The maximum Chrome, Firefox and Safari currently permit.

  • 57× longer retargeting window vs Safari default

Reach users who saw your ad 6 months ago instead of last week.

  • Bigger lookalike seed pools

More retained users in your custom audience = better lookalike quality on Meta, Google, TikTok.

  • Smart Bidding has 13× more signal history

Algorithms optimize on 400 days of behavior, not 7 days. CPA stabilizes faster.

  • Critical for high-AOV / long-consideration purchases

If your average buyer takes 30+ days to convert, default cookies miss them. 400-day cookies don’t.

Cookie lifetime — head to head

How long cookies survive in real-world traffic

Safari ITP (default)7 days
Chrome / Firefox (typical)30 days
Meta default retargeting window90 days
Google Ads default cookie540 days(but capped by browser)
Our 1st-party server-side400 days

400 days is the hard maximum enforced by RFC 6265bis (Chrome 104+, Safari 17+, Firefox 110+). We set it via HTTP Set-Cookie: Max-Age=34560000 on your subdomain. Survives Safari ITP’s 7-day client-side cap.

Under the hood

What’s actually happening on your server-side stack

Six capabilities your default Google Ads not tracking setup doesn’t have. Built on the same Stape Pro stack used by enterprise DTC brands.

Cookie window

Cookie Keeper

400-day 1st-party cookies

Set via HTTP headers on your subdomain — the maximum browsers allow. Survives Safari ITP’s 7-day cap that kills retargeting.

Ad-block resistance

Custom Loader

Custom-loaded GTM scripts

Your gtm.js and analytics scripts load through a custom path on YOUR domain. uBlock, AdBlock Plus, Brave can’t identify them as trackers.

Attribution

Click ID Restorer

Click ID restoration

fbclid / gclid / ttclid / wbraid recovered from the URL and persisted server-side. Multi-redirect funnels stop dropping attribution. Safari user IDs restored.

Profit signal

POAS Data Feed

POAS — Profit on Ad Spend

Send actual profit data (not revenue) to Meta / Google. Smart Bidding optimizes for the metric that matters: net margin, not gross revenue.

Identity

User ID

Cross-session User ID

Stable userID generated server-side from IP + UA + SSL fingerprint. Stitches anonymous → known → returning visitors across 400 days.

Audience signal

GEO Headers

GeoIP enrichment

Country, region, city, postal code passed to Meta / Google CAPI from your server — without exposing the raw user IP to the browser.

Compliance

Anonymizer

PII hashing by default

Email, phone, name, address are SHA-256 hashed on your server before they leave for Meta or Google. Zero raw PII in transit.

Quality filtering

Bot Detection

Bot traffic detection

Bot/scraper traffic identified at the gateway and blocked from polluting your audiences. Smart Bidding optimizes against humans, not bots.

Reliability

Dedup logic

Browser ↔ server dedup

Deterministic event_id and event_time so Meta / Google never double-count. Your reported ROAS stops contradicting Stripe.

Reputation

Dedicated IP

Dedicated outbound IP

Your sGTM gets a dedicated static IP for outgoing CAPI requests. Better deliverability to Meta, Google, TikTok — no shared-IP noise.

Residency

Multi-region

EU / US region routing

GDPR-conscious stores route their CAPI traffic through EU regions (Stape EU or self-hosted GCR europe-west). No US data hop.

Data warehouse

BigQuery export

BigQuery + Looker dashboard

Server logs + GA4 raw events streamed to BigQuery. Looker Studio dashboard branded for your team. Premium tier.

We’re official Stape Pro partners — every Power-Up above is enabled and configured for you. Or we self-host the equivalent on your Cloud Run / GKE if your traffic justifies the cost crossover. You pick.

Live data flow

What your stack is doing — right now

Every conversion fires through your subdomain, gets enriched with hashed identity params, deduped against the browser pixel, then forwarded to Meta CAPI, Google EC, TikTok Events API and Microsoft UET in parallel.

You see this stream live in your sGTM debug console — not a SaaS dashboard you rent. It’s your data, on your server, on your subdomain.

What you get

What you get on a Google Ads conversion rebuild

Item 01

A conversion-action audit with Tag Diagnostics evidence

Every action in the account listed with its ID, label, status, counting rule, attribution model and whether anything on your site is actually firing it. Screenshots included.

Item 02

Auto-tagging, conversion linker and cross-domain fixed

Auto-tagging enabled at the account level, the linker deployed on every entry page, and both ends of any checkout hand-off configured so _gcl_aw survives the jump.

Item 03

A server container on your own subdomain

Google Tag Manager server-side running on a subdomain you own, so the conversion request is first-party and doesn't depend on a browser that may block it.

Item 04

The conversion fired from your backend, keyed to order ID

The money event leaves your server when the order is genuinely confirmed — not when a thank-you page happens to load, and not again when someone refreshes it.

Item 05

Enhanced Conversions for Web sent from the server

Hashing and normalization handled server-side rather than in page JavaScript, so the identifiers Google receives are consistently formatted and consent-gated.

Item 06

A line-by-line reconciliation sheet: Ads vs your orders

Seven days of Google Ads conversions matched against your order export, with every unmatched row explained as either attribution difference or real data loss.

The honest math

Three ways to fix your tracking. One of them makes sense.

Option 1

Hire a senior tracking engineer

$15K–$25Kin dev cost

or 2–4 weeks of senior FTE time

  • 2–4 weeks before anything ships
  • Misses iOS / Safari / dedup edge cases
  • No EMQ guarantee — it’s “done” when they say so
  • Pixel debugging is not their day job

Option 2

Triple Whale / Hyros / Northbeam

$300–$2,000/month forever

$18K–$120K over 5 years

  • You rent a dashboard — they own your data
  • Cancel and you lose attribution overnight
  • Per-event / per-visitor pricing surprises
  • Still doesn’t fix your underlying tracking
Recommended

Option 3 — us

Done-for-you 1st-party server-side

$400–$1,800one-time

pay once · own the stack forever

  • Live in 2–4 days · accurate data within 7
  • iOS / Safari / dedup all handled by default
  • Meta EMQ 8+ guaranteed in writing
  • You own everything — server, container, runbook

We’re upfront: if you have a senior in-house dev with capacity and 4 weeks, hiring is fine. If you spend $1M+/yr on ads and want a SaaS dashboard layered on top, Triple Whale works. For most paid-ad advertisers between, we’re the math that makes sense.

“I’ll personally walk through your tracking on the call. No SDR. No sales pitch.”

I’ve spent 8 years rebuilding tracking for DTC brands, SaaS founders, agencies, and one thing I’ve learned: most tracking problems aren’t technical — they’re trust problems. You don’t know who to believe. Your current vendor swears it’s fine. Meta’s reports look great. Stripe says otherwise.

On our call, I’ll personally show you exactly what’s leaking, exactly what it would cost to recover, and whether you should hire us at all. If your current setup is genuinely fine, I’ll tell you. If a $400 browser-side fix is enough, I’ll say so. No upsell pressure.

Book the call. Worst case, you walk away with a free 47-point audit checklist. Best case, we deliver your 1st-party server-side stack in 2–4 days and your data is fully accurate within 7 days.

Diagnose it honestly

Some of this is normal Google Ads behavior. Some of it isn't.

Before you pay anyone, find out which side of this line you're on. Google Ads does several things that look like broken tracking and aren't — and a few things that look survivable and are actually a dead signal path.

Normal — not a fault

  • Today's conversion numbers keep climbing for weeks

Google dates a conversion to the day of the click, not the day of the sale, then backfills. Last Tuesday's total will still be rising thirty days later. A thin number for a recent week is expected, not evidence of a fault.

  • Ads reports more conversions than thank-you page views

Modeled and cross-device conversions live only in Google Ads. When consent is denied or a signed-in user converts on another device, Google estimates or matches it. Your page-view count was never going to include those.

  • The Conversions column shows fractions like 3.42

Data-driven attribution splits credit for one conversion across several clicks, so a campaign can own a fraction of it. Fractional values in the column mean attribution is working, not that something is corrupted.

  • "Inactive" on a genuinely low-volume conversion action

Google flags an action inactive when it hasn't recorded a conversion in the last seven days. On an action that fires twice a month, that status is arithmetic, not a broken tag. Fire one and watch it flip back.

Actually broken

  • Flat zero for a full 30-day window while orders keep coming

Attribution differences shrink a number. They don't zero it. Thirty days of nothing while your backend records paid orders means no valid hit is reaching Google at all.

  • Conversions stop on a specific date and never resume

A step change to zero on one calendar day is always technical: a theme deploy, a plugin update, a consent-banner change, or someone removing a snippet. Attribution never changes on a date.

  • Paid clicks never convert but direct and organic do

If conversions exist for every channel except Google Ads, the gclid is being stripped somewhere between landing and checkout — a redirect, a canonical rewrite, or a payment domain the linker never touched.

  • Ads holds at a fixed small fraction of your order count

A ratio that sits at fifteen percent month after month is a capture failure. Real attribution gaps move around with your channel mix; a frozen ratio means a whole class of orders never reports.

Diagnostic sequence

Twenty minutes in your own account, before you call anyone

Run these in order. Most accounts I look at fail on one of the first three, and two of those you can fix yourself for free.

  1. 1

Read the conversion action's own settings

Goals, then Conversions, then Summary. Open the action and check four fields: status, whether "Include in 'Conversions'" is on, the counting setting, and the click-through window. Write down the conversion ID and label.

  2. 2

Confirm auto-tagging is on, then click your own ad

Admin, then Account settings, then Auto-tagging. Now search for one of your own keywords, click the ad, and look at the landing URL. If there's no gclid parameter on it, nothing downstream can work.

  3. 3

Place a test order with Tag Assistant recording

Start Tag Assistant on your site, walk the full checkout including any payment redirect, and confirm the Google Ads conversion tag fires on the confirmation page carrying the same conversion ID and label you wrote down.

  4. 4

Open the Diagnostics tab on the action

Google Ads reports recent tag activity, the share of conversions arriving without a click ID, and Enhanced Conversions coverage right there. It will often name your problem before you do.

  5. 5

Search the page source for stray AW- snippets

View source on your confirmation page and search for "AW-". A hardcoded gtag left behind by a previous agency, firing alongside your container, is the most common cause of counts nobody can explain.

  6. 6

Compare a closed week of Ads to your orders

Export seven days of paid orders from your backend and put the count next to Google Ads conversions for the same week by conversion date. The size and shape of that gap tells you what you're dealing with.

Source-of-truth validation

How I prove it's fixed: your orders, row by row

A green checkmark in Google Ads proves a request arrived. It doesn't prove your orders are accounted for. The only verification I accept is a match against your own records.

Source of truthYour order table or CRM closed-won records — not the thank-you page
  • Pick a 14-day window that ended over 30 days ago, so every click-through window on it has fully closed.
  • Export every paid order for that window with order ID, timestamp, value and currency from your backend.
  • Pull Google Ads conversions for the same window twice: by click date and by conversion date.
  • Match order to conversion on the order ID we pass through Enhanced Conversions, not on daily totals.
  • Classify every miss by cause: no gclid, outside the window, consent denied, or never sent at all.
  • Sign-off is 95%+ tracking accuracy on orders that had a recorded Google click, verified against your export.

Straight talk

When hiring me for this is the wrong call

Four situations where I'd tell you to keep your money, and I say this often enough that it costs me work.

  • Your checkout is on one domain, the browser tag is recording conversions today, and Ads is within about ten percent of your order count.
  • The only fault is that the action is Secondary or "Include in 'Conversions'" is switched off. That's two clicks in your own account — go make them.
  • Auto-tagging is simply off. Turn it on, wait a week, and re-check before you decide you need a server-side rebuild.
  • You're spending a few hundred dollars a month. Smart Bidding has too little volume for cleaner data to change what it does.

Got questions?

The honest answers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Can I fix this myself?

Often, yes — and I'd rather tell you that than sell you something. Check three things first: is auto-tagging on in account settings, is the conversion action marked Primary with "Include in Conversions" enabled, and does the conversion ID and label in your tag match the action you're looking at. That's a twenty-minute check and it resolves a real share of "not tracking" cases. Where it stops being a DIY job is when the tag is provably firing and Google still won't record it — that's usually a cookie or cross-domain problem, and it needs a server container to fix properly.

02When do we NOT need this?

If you're spending a few hundred dollars a month, selling one product on one domain with no redirect checkout, and the browser tag is recording conversions today, leave it alone. A server-side rebuild is worth paying for when your checkout crosses a domain, when a meaningful share of your traffic is on Safari or iOS, or when bidding decisions are being made on the numbers. Below that, you're buying precision you won't act on.

03My tag fires in Tag Assistant but Ads still shows nothing. Why?

Tag Assistant proves the request left the browser. It doesn't prove Google accepted it or had a click to attach it to. The usual culprits are a missing gclid because auto-tagging is off, a conversion label that belongs to a different action, or the conversion arriving outside the click-through window. That's exactly the gap Tag Diagnostics plus a server-side rebuild closes.

04Does this mean I lost the sales?

No, and I want to be precise about this because it matters. The orders happened and the money is in your bank. What's missing is the attribution — Google doesn't know which clicks produced them, so its bidding is flying on partial information. Fixing tracking doesn't recover revenue; it recovers the ability to see which spend earned it.

05Do I have to move off my current thank-you page setup?

Not necessarily. The page tag can stay as a signal. What changes is that the authoritative conversion comes from your backend, keyed to the order ID, so a customer who closes the tab after paying still counts and a customer who refreshes doesn't count twice. The page tag becomes a redundancy, not the single point of failure.

06What if the problem is Consent Mode blocking the tag?

That's a common finding and it's a configuration problem, not a broken tag. If ad_storage is denied and the tag has a hard consent condition on it, the tag simply never runs. The fix is wiring Consent Mode v2 correctly so Google receives consent state and can apply its own modeling, rather than the tag going dark. I'll tell you what your banner is actually doing — I won't promise you any specific compliance status, that's your counsel's call.

07How do I know it's actually fixed?

Because I show you the reconciliation, not a screenshot of a green checkmark. We take a week of Google Ads conversions and a week of your order records and match them row by row. The written guarantee is 95%+ tracking accuracy verified against your backend — that's the number I stand behind, and it's measured against your data, not mine.
