How to track product-qualified lead to closed won for Reddit Ads

A product-qualified lead is defined by what someone did in the product, not by what they filled in. That makes the qualifying event a product decision rather than a marketing one — and it means the definition lives in code that marketing usually cannot see. On Reddit Ads the specifics that matter are the click identifier (the rdt_cid click identifier), the import mechanism (the Reddit Conversions API), and Reddit deduplicates on the conversion ID carried on both the pixel event and the server event. The chain only works end to end if the identifier is captured on landing and stored on the closed-won opportunity in your CRM — no cookie survives the gap between ad click and closed won.

The problem

Where this funnel usually breaks

Reddit · PQL → closed won-specific issues
Leak #01

The PQL definition living only in engineering

Marketing optimises toward a threshold it cannot see and cannot influence, and the definition changes without notice.

Leak #02

Individual signups counted, accounts ignored

Five colleagues from one company is one opportunity. Counting people inflates the pipeline and hides that a single account is in market.

Leak #03

Thresholds tuned without telling anyone

A product team lowering the seat threshold triples PQL volume overnight, and the marketing report reads it as campaign success.

Leak #04

Self-serve revenue and sales-assisted revenue pooled

The same account can pay a card charge and sign a contract. Counting both double-counts the customer.

Specific to Reddit × PQL → closed won

Reddit PQL to closed won: developer signups that pull in sales

On Reddit, track PQL to closed won by sending a Lead event through the Reddit Conversions API when the account crosses your usage threshold and a Purchase from the CRM on closed won, matched on the rdt_cid stored with the account and hashed email. Reddit fits developer and technical tools adopted bottom-up.

Product-led sales for developer platforms, databases, observability or security tools often start with an engineer who saw a post in a technical subreddit, signed up with a work email, and pulled colleagues in. That is a real path to a PQL, and Reddit's community targeting reaches it. It is a weak fit for products bought top-down by non-technical buyers who never read those communities.

The PQL usually arrives weeks after the click, beyond Reddit's shorter default windows, and many engineers come back through direct visits or search. Store rdt_cid on the account rather than the user, and add an optional source question at signup, so Reddit-sourced accounts can be counted in the CRM even when Reddit doesn't credit the event.

Optimize Reddit campaigns on signups or an early activation event, since PQL volume will be small. Send the PQL and closed won for reporting, one event per account, with the first-year contract value on closed won, and review PQL rate by subreddit-targeted ad group to see which communities actually produce accounts that sales can close.

Architecture

The exact event sequence

Five stages. The break is at qualification: the threshold is set in the product, and if marketing does not know what it is, the reported conversion is a number nobody can explain. The identifier has to survive all of them.

  1. Step 1

    Ad click

Onto a self-serve signup, usually with no sales contact at all.

  2. Step 2

    Self-serve signup

An individual, frequently without their company's knowledge.

  3. Step 3

    Usage threshold crossed

The PQL definition. Seats added, volume used, a specific feature adopted.

  4. Step 4

    Sales contact

Triggered by the product signal rather than by a form.

  5. Step 5

    Closed won

At a contract value far above what the individual was paying.

Diagnostic sequence

What's specific to Reddit Ads

The funnel logic above is the same wherever you advertise. These are the parts that change because it's Reddit Ads.

  1. 1

Click identifier: the rdt_cid click identifier

Reddit appends rdt_cid to your landing page URL, and the Reddit Pixel keeps its own identifier in the _rdt_uuid cookie. Reddit's audience is unusually privacy-aware — ad-blocker and tracker-blocker usage on Reddit traffic runs well above the web average — so the share of visits where the pixel never loads at all is higher here than on any other network in this list. The URL parameter is the identifier that survives; the cookie often does not.

  2. 2

    Import mechanism: the Conversions API

Server events posted to Reddit's Conversions API with the click identifier and hashed customer information. Reddit's implementation is younger than Meta's and its documentation moves — confirm the current endpoint, event names and required fields against Reddit's own developer docs rather than an integration blog post.

  3. 3

    Deduplication

The pixel and the Conversions API event must carry the same conversion identifier for the same action. Because so much Reddit traffic never runs the pixel at all, a lot of accounts skip the pixel entirely and send server-side only — which is a legitimate choice here in a way it rarely is elsewhere, and it removes the deduplication problem completely. Decide deliberately rather than running both and hoping.

  4. 4

    Window and timing

Reddit's default attribution windows are shorter than Meta's and are configurable. Check what your account is set to before reconciling anything, and verify the accepted event-freshness limit for server events against Reddit's current documentation.

  5. 5

    The Reddit gotcha

Reddit converts on a delay and on trust. People read a thread, leave, think about it, and come back through a branded search a week later — which is a genuine Reddit-driven conversion that Reddit will never be credited for and Google will happily claim. If Reddit is judged purely on last-click inside its own window, it will always look worse than it is. Build the measurement, then argue about attribution with that context on the table.

Source-of-truth validation

How to prove the chain works

One real journey, followed all the way, then a reconciliation. Neither on its own is enough.

Source of truthyour CRM, joined to the product usage that triggered qualification
  • A live Reddit ad clicked, and the identifier confirmed present on the landing URL.
  • The same identifier confirmed on the closed-won opportunity in your CRM after a full real journey through every step.
  • Closed won confirmed arriving at Reddit Ads, verified by the events received and matched in Reddit Ads Manager, reconciled against your own records.
  • Your crm, joined to the product usage that triggered qualification reconciled against Reddit Ads per record over a fully closed window.
  • The same reconciliation repeated 30 days later.

Straight talk

When this doesn't apply to you

Worth checking before you build anything, because two of these are common and both mean the work isn't worth doing.

  • If you have no sales motion on top of self-serve, there is no PQL stage — measure the self-serve conversion directly.
  • If you are not running Reddit at meaningful spend, skip it. And if your Reddit strategy is organic community presence rather than ads, none of this applies — that traffic has no click identifier by definition.
  • If your cycle from click to closed won regularly exceeds the import window, the final event can't drive bidding whatever you build. Optimize toward accounts crossing the usage threshold, deduplicated to the organisation instead and use the later data for budget decisions rather than for bidding.
  • If almost none of your closed-won deals carry a click identifier today, that's the whole project. Fix capture first — the import is the easy half and no tooling rescues a record with nothing to reference.

What you get

The implementation, on Reddit Ads

Item 01

Capture the rdt_cid click identifier on landing

Read rdt_cid from the landing URL and persist it server-side on first sight. Do not build on the pixel's cookie — on this audience specifically, assuming the pixel ran is the mistake.

Item 02

Persist it to the closed-won opportunity in your CRM

Store the identifier on the account rather than the user, since the person who signed up is frequently not the person who signs.

Item 03

Send closed won from the record

Your CRM on closed-won, deduplicated to the account, with the qualifying product event recorded on the opportunity. Dispatched to Reddit Ads through the Reddit Conversions API.

Item 04

Deduplicate and reverse

Reddit deduplicates on the conversion id carried on both the pixel event and the server event. Lost and disqualified opportunities reverse.

Got questions?

The honestanswers.

No buzzwords, no upsell. If we don’t know, we say so.

01Is Reddit good for product-led growth in developer tools?

Often, because engineers discuss tools in specific subreddits and sign up to try them. Measure it on PQL rate per account, not click-through or signup cost.

02How do I attribute a closed-won deal to Reddit if the engineer came back through search?

Store the rdt_cid and any self-reported source on the account at first signup. The CRM can then credit Reddit even when Reddit's own window has closed.

03Why isn't self-serve signup enough to optimize on?

Because signups are individuals and deals are organisations, and the ratio between them differs enough by channel to invert which campaigns look effective.

04How does the identifier survive to closed won?

It doesn't, as a cookie — the gap is too long. It has to be written onto the closed-won opportunity in your CRM at the point of ad click, where it lives as a field rather than as browser storage.

05What does Reddit Ads need to accept the conversion?

An event name Reddit recognizes, a conversion identifier matched to the pixel if you are also running one, a timestamp, hashed customer information, and the click identifier where you have it.

06How long does this take to build?

Two to four days for the implementation, plus a closed reconciliation window before we'd call it verified. Capture and persistence are the fiddly parts; the import itself is usually an afternoon.

07Can I do this myself?

Yes, and the reference pages on this site cover the mechanics. The part that's genuinely tedious rather than clever is keeping the rdt_cid click identifier alive through multi-step forms and a signup by one person and a purchase by another at the same company, which fails silently at every stage.
